‘I wanted to have a word with you,’ said the colonel, joining the doc at the veranda. The doc was waiting to speak with the DSP, who was busy discussing the details and examining the statements.

‘The girl is distraught because of this incident,’ remarked Acharya, watching Tia leave with Arif.

‘Not just Tia; I think the murder has shaken everyone. To date, Ramsar has had petty crimes, but never anything as gruesome as murder,’ said Sunil Rawat. ‘The question is which one of her guests wanted Ramola dead? And would they go to the extent of murdering her, just to stop her from publishing a book? Sounds ridiculous.’

‘My dear chap, when it comes to career, some ambitious people brook no hindrances. They will do anything to remove them. Murder is just one of the ways,’ replied the colonel.

‘The question is whether the DSP will be able to find the murderer? I don’t have too much confidence in his methods.’

‘Well, he isn’t working alone,’ the colonel replied. ‘Tim will be assisting him and I have great faith in the young man’s intelligence.’

‘And you’re there to help them,’ added the doc, who had great faith in his friend’s capabilities. ‘The case will land in your lap, finally. I’ve no doubt about that.’

‘I would like the killer apprehended at the earliest.’

‘I was watching Arif. He’s particularly jumpy this morning. Something is bothering the guy.’

‘Yes, the guy seems overly anxious. The repeated knuckle-cracking gave him away even if his tongue didn’t,’ agreed Acharya.

‘The other guys seem to take it in stride, though,’ opined the doc. ‘They are shaken but in control.’

‘You mean the director, the husband and the ex-star?’

‘The husband was busy flirting with the secretary.’ The disgusted look on the doc’s face spoke volumes. ‘The guy seems totally blasé about the murder.’

‘My dear friend, which era do you live in. This cadre of people, the kind who live purely for themselves, grieve for no one. What is surprising is that none of them heard a scuffle or a scream,’ said Acharya, thinking aloud. ‘Someone should have heard something.’

‘It’s surprising, but not impossible. Most of them were drunk when they returned after the party,’ the doc proposed.

‘Ramola had taken a sleeping pill and must have been asleep when she was attacked.’

‘How do you know she had taken a sleeping pill?’ asked the doc.

‘Elementary, my dear, as Sherlock Holmes would have said. A glass of water and a strip of tablets were found on the side table next to the bed. Two of the pills were missing. Anyway, the post-mortem will point out the exact details.’

‘I had warned her against it,’ said the doc.

‘Was Ramola diabetic?’ Acharya asked.

‘Yes.’

‘That would mean regular insulin injections, right?’

‘Yes.’

‘Was she using the intermediate-acting insulin or a rapid-acting one?’ asked the colonel.

‘The intermediate-acting, but why are you asking these questions?’

‘Did she use a pre-filled insulin pen or a syringe?’

‘You seem to know a lot about insulin.’

‘Well, my mother was a diabetic.’

‘Ramola used a pre-filled insulin pen,’ replied the doc.

‘I need to get a clear picture of her medication.
