Over the next two and a half months, life at Ammon gradually evened out into a routine. Theren’s mornings were spent in training with Vivien and Kaewa, learning many things that she could not imagine she would ever use, and some she did not know how she had managed without. Vivien taught her about deflecting arrows and spears, and how it was much easier to make them glance with a sweeping blow than simply stop them in midair, while Kaewa taught her to recognize many of the more common combat spells that elementalists would use, and when best to strike in order to disperse them.
Then, in the afternoons, she would return to Junan and her unit and deal with more mundane matters, like learning how to form a shield wall and stand in various attack formations. No matter how much she argued that it was unnecessary for her, being a mage, Junan insisted that she should at least learn, so that she would better understand what her allies were doing on the battlefield. Already fitter than many of her fellows, she was hardened even further by the intense training all through the day, and she would often show off her burgeoning muscles to Lilith in the evening—and only partially to make her laugh.
Lilith herself wrote missives to the High King twice, though they did not know if they would ever reach her, and penned at least five letters to Ebon and Kalem, telling them of their exploits. She also contacted a nearby branch of her family to enlist help for getting aid to the city of Mabawa, and was extremely proud to hear that stores of food had been delivered before the oncoming approach of winter. Theren had feared that Chancellor Karan might be angry with Lilith for interfering, but he mostly just seemed glad that the nuisance had been removed.
Now that their travel was over, Lilith finally seemed to be regaining some weight, much to Theren’s joy. Though her work liaising between the chancellor and the people of Feldemar was often unforgiving, it was not constant, and she spent many afternoons reading books that Kaewa had loaned her, or watching Theren and her fellows at their physical training with wry amusement. Theren did not notice much change in how most of the older Mystics treated either of them, but Vivien certainly seemed increasingly impressed with Lilith’s activities, and even the chancellor seemed to listen to her about as often as he listened to anybody.
Autumn wore on, the air gradually becoming cooler and cooler, until they could rarely go outside even during the day without their breath steaming in the air. Sudden, violent rainstorms were common, turning the plain beneath them into a putrid marsh as the water lingered. Every now and then, reports would reach them of the war front in Dulmun, or of coastal towns that had been raided, and the mood in the fortress would grow grim. Mutterings began to circulate about a plan to send Mystics
