The first of the goons rammed his shoulder into the door, and with one shot, it sprang open. I took the scalpel-like instrument and thrust it into his right eye. He stumbled backward, giving me enough time to grab his weapon. I removed the blade from his eye and slit his throat, end to end. No need to waste bullets.
I knew it was only seconds before the other guards made their way into the room. I looked over to Gonzalez and said, âIâm sorry, but I have to make this believable. If they think youâre in on it, then youâre as good as dead.â
He understood what that meant and braced himself. I shot him in the right shoulder, and he fell back to the ground. I hoped to deliver nothing more than a flesh wound.
I swiveled my head back toward the door just as three guards trampled into the room. They were fish in a barrel. Three quick shots and they were down on the ground, as dead as the huevos rancheros Iâd eaten hours earlier.
I turned back toward Gonzalez and waved at him repeatedly, but he didnât budge. I did it again, but he failed to respond.
âCome on! Youâve got to go right now!â
He stood with his hand over his shoulder, a stream of blood came running out. He looked me in the eyes and waved me on. âGo on with without me. Iâm not going to make it.â He looked down at the quickly expanding red stain on his shirt and yelled, âGoooo!â
I ran across to the other side of the room where Gonzalez was doubled over against the wall. I ripped my shirt off and applied pressure to his wound. He looked up at my upper torso and shook his head. âThose are some serious scars on your chest. Looks like youâve been through your share of fights.â
I shrugged. âBattle scars. Industry hazard, I guess.â
Ignoring Gonzalezâs request to leave him behind, I managed to place his huge frame over my back. Iâd heard of those cases where a mother lifted the back end of a car to save her child, and I guess that was what happened when I threw Gonzalez over my shoulders.
As I trudged up the stairs with the giant draped over my back, I stumbled a few times but finally made it to the top. I was surprised not to find anyone impeding my progress. His weight eventually became too much, and I had to place him down on the floor. I looked out the window and saw the truck Iâd borrowed from Hernandez still sitting out in the driveway where I left it.
It was clear Gonzalez couldnât stand to lose much more blood. I tried applying physical pressure to the wound, but he fought me. âHey, do you want to die here?â I asked him.
He started to lose consciousness. His voice was weak, and it was difficult to understand. âGo. I donât⦠donât know⦠why youâre⦠try⦠trying to⦠save me.â
I got down on the ground next to him and looked him in the eye.
