Gabriel studied Lucy and the wild beating of his heart subsided a little. When heâd spied the damaged buggy in the ditch, heâd feared the worst. And when he saw she was pregnant, stark terror struck him.
âYouâll see a doctor soon,â he said reassuringly. Heâd worry until he knew for certain that she was all right. She looked at him, her big beautiful blue eyes filled with gratitude, and he shifted uncomfortably.
âAn ambulance is on its way,â the male paramedic said. âLucy, you need to go to the emergency room.â
As if summoned, flashing lights and the whine of a siren heralded the ambulanceâs arrival.
âIâd rather go to the clinic down the road. I have a doctor there. She can help me. I promise Iâll go to the hospital if she tells me to.â
The paramedics exchanged a look.
âWeâll take you there by ambulance,â the woman insisted. âNo arguments.â
Lucy nodded. She grabbed on to Gabrielâs arm. âWould you go with me?â
âDo you need me to get in touch with your husband?â he asked quietly.
She shook her head, briefly averting her gaze. âI... Iâm a widow.â
He felt a jolt; he knew what it was to be hurt and alone. âIâm sorry,â he said softly. âIâll go if you want me to.â
âDanki,â she whispered, her blue eyes filling with relief.
âIâll be right back,â he said. âKnow anyone who can drive my buggy?â After only two months in New Berne, he was familiar with the medical building with doctorsâ offices and an urgent care facility. Heâd become a patient of a neurologist and a burn specialist because of severe injuries heâd suffered during a house fire.
âIâll do it. I know horses,â Bert told him. âDrive lots of wagons. Iâll be happy to drive it home for you.â He smiled. âIâll call my nephew. He can bring me back for my pickup. And Iâll arrange for my brother-in-law to bring your horse home in his trailer. Whatâs the address?â
Gabriel looked at Lucy, who gave Bert her address. He was surprised that she lived about a half mile down the road from him.
âI donât know how to thank you, Bert,â Lucy said.
The gruff Englisher smiled. âYou just did.â He shot Gabriel a glance. âYou take care of her, and Iâll take care of everything else.â
The ambulance driver parked and the female EMT swung open the double rear doors. Two ambulance workers pulled out a stretcher and carried it in Lucyâs direction.
âAre you sure you want me to go with you?â Gabriel asked.
She nodded. âPlease. I donât know what I would have done if you hadnât stopped to help me.â
The two paramedics helped to lower Lucy onto the stretcher. âGabriel stays with me,â Lucy told him.
It looked as if one of the ambulance workers would object, but then the female medic said, âHe can go.â The attendants lifted Lucy into the back of the vehicle. They climbed in after her and waited for Gabriel to get in before closing the doors.
When he woke up this morning,
