CHAPTER
16
I keep track of Janeâs viewing habits on our various streaming accounts from my work computer. In the days that follow Charlesâs text, he mainlines Werner Herzogâs entire catalog before consuming the David Attenboroughânarrated version of Planet Earth. I let that go without comment. When he starts re-viewing the same program with Sigourney Weaverâs voice-over, however, I threaten to change all our passwords and recruit Ming to take him out for coffee.
Over the weekend, I learn more than Iâd like about the use of bovine bile to control the spread of coral-eating starfish, but Iâm cautiously optimistic. He performs at Meryton and, on Sunday, tears himself away from the Discovery Channel to help research a few ramen places for next weekâs visit from my cousin. By the time Monday rolls around, Janeâs entertainment selections still favor the informative variety, but heâs getting out of the apartment for more than just work, has come climbing with me twice, and ventures up to Manhattan to join Ming and me for lunch on Wednesday.
âIâll forget him,â Jane announces, placing his napkin beside his plate. âEverything will go back to the way it was before.â
I say nothing, but Iâm helpless against the incredulous look that draws across my face.
âYou doubt me,â he says tightly. âDonât. I may think of him as the most pleasant man Iâve ever met, but thatâs all. Iâm not going to be bitter about it. With a little time . . .â
His voice becomes strained, and he nudges at his side salad with his fork. Ming kicks me under the table. Jane clears his throat, sitting straighter in his chair. âAt least I know it was an error of fancy on my side, and it has done no harm to anyone other than myself.â
âReally?â I say. âBecause the only thing thatâs keeping me from wanting to throttle him is the prospect that heâs miserable, too.â Ming raises her glass in solidarity.
Jane purses his lips. âItâs not as though he meant to hurt me.â
I scowl. Usually, Janeâs insistence on universal goodwill is endearing. On this occasion, I cannot abide it. âHe may not have meant to hurt you, but he still did. Iâm holding it against him.â
Janeâs neutral expression wavers, and I hate myself for letting my pettiness show, even if itâs in his defense.
I settle into my seat with an overwrought huff. âAnd Iâm going to end up saying something shitty about him and then youâll be offended that Iâve spoken ill of someone youâre determined not to hate because youâre a goddamn angel and none of us deserve you, so you should probably tell me to shut up while you can.â
Ming chuckles. Jane smiles, and itâs the first real smile Iâve seen from him since last Tuesday.
âI love you,â he reminds me. I blow him a kiss.
Jane is teaching a piano lesson in Chelsea after lunch, and we part ways outside the restaurant. Ming links arms with me as we watch Janeâs retreating form. Heâs walking tall, but his stride has none of its usual pep.
