Chapter Thirty

The sun was setting on New York, and the streetlights would soon illuminate the quiet, tree-lined road. Near a corner, a man stood quietly against a building and sipped black coffee from a styrofoam cup. It was his third visit to that spot since knocking on Porter Dent’s door.

He wore a zipped-up black leather jacket, black jeans, and a black beanie pulled down just above his eyes. He never stayed long, just enough to finish his coffee. And he had made sure each visit was at a different time of the day. He watched Dent’s building and took note of who went in and who came out. He kept watch on the balcony and windows of Dent’s eighth-floor apartment. Was there movement inside? Did a light flicker on? He sought one thing, something very specific: clarity on what Dent had said to him earlier.

After visiting Thorton at her apartment and faking her suicide, he had kept his eyes on Dent. He kept track of where Dent went and whom he visited. He was after anything that looked out of place or would send a signal that Dent suspected something was amiss with Thorton’s death. It didn’t really matter though; he knew all along he would end Dent and that it would happen after Thorton’s funeral. It was essential.

From what he could ascertain, no one had visited Dent’s apartment since the police were called. They only stuck around for half a day. The managing director of the New York Public Library also showed up that same day, but since then, no one else came to the apartment. He decided to wait and watch for a bit, to see if family would show. So far no one had. The man hadn’t planned on coming back to Dent’s apartment. It wasn’t smart. But he had no choice; he needed to get back inside. Something Dent had said to him that night was nagging at him.

Now seemed like as good an opportunity as ever. The man gulped the last of his coffee, tossed the cup into a nearby garbage bin, and crossed the street. He rode the elevator to Dent’s floor and walked through the cool, narrow hallway until he reached the last apartment in the hall. His footsteps were muted by the brown carpet. He picked the deadbolt in under two minutes.

Once inside, he locked the door behind him. Images of what had happened the night Dent died flooded his memory. Gaining access was easier than he had anticipated. Dent had opened the door immediately after seeing the flash drive.

“Where did you get that?” he had asked, reaching out to snatch it away. The man had allowed Dent to take it, temporarily.

The man watched Dent fondle the flash drive.

“Who are you?” Dent had asked.

“Are you familiar with the information on that flash drive?”

Dent shook his head.

“You worked with Juli Thorton. I find it hard to believe you know nothing.”

“She didn’t share the information on it with me.”

“But you knew she had it.”

“I— Did you kill her?”

“It’s my understanding she committed suicide.
