Chapter Eleven

Lacey had trouble getting through the rest of the photos with a smile on her face. Jared had pretty much, in front of the reporter, told her he was dumping her because she wouldn’t quit the thing she loved. Anger and sorrow were warring inside of her as she smiled and answered the reporter’s questions.

“I thought it looked like you two were a couple,” Jessica said, tucking her camera away. “But his comment about rodeo...” The reporter stared into Lacey’s eyes. “You sure you want to lose him by trying to be the first woman to ride a bull at the NFR?”

She wasn’t sure what she wanted. But she’d set her sights on the National Finals Rodeo and she was so close, she couldn’t see giving that up. Not now. No one in her life had ever believed in her dreams. She’d hoped Jared would want her dream for her as much as she wanted it. But it wasn’t going to happen.

“If it’s meant to be, we’ll get together when I’m done chasing the gold buckle.” She smiled and made light of their relationship when in her heart, she’d be crushed if when she did give up rodeo life, he had moved on.

Jessica studied her then shook her head. “Some people don’t see what they have until it’s too late. I wish you luck at the Finals and in keeping that man.”

She watched the woman walk to her car and drive away. Her heart told her to find Jared and talk things out. Her gut said he wouldn’t be willing to listen. Frustration sent her to the barn.

The first place she’d started working out was in a barn. Helping Dad feed and take care of the animals, she’d packed buckets of feed and water, did pull-ups from anything she could grab and dangle from.

She walked over to the bow gate leading into a stall. With her feet planted under the metal piping, she jumped and caught hold with her good hand. It was the hand that needed the most strength to hold onto the bull rope. After ten pull-ups, she dropped to the ground. Sweat beaded her brow and her arm felt like a cooked noodle. How could she have gotten so out of shape in such a short time? At the wall, she put the palm of her good hand flat on the boards and leaned in. Feeling her pectoral muscles strain, she pushed her body back. It wasn’t as good as push-ups on the floor but would have to do until she had two arms.

A decision needed to be made about the next month and a half. Stay here at the ranch or go home. She knew the answer. Stay here. She loved her parents, but they would badger her every day about quitting the rodeo life. Here, Brett let her be, with only an occasional lecture on what she planned to do the rest of her life.

A bucket sat under the spigot. She filled it with water and lifted, doing reps, using different muscles.
