Chapter 13

“I think I have enough to take a run at Sarah,” Jacinta told Jeff as she approached his desk.

“Is that really necessary?” the director replied, we’ll soon have other prisoners of a more appropriate age for interrogation.

“I’ve been recording my sessions with Victoria,” Jacinta continued without acknowledging Jeff’s statement. “Looking for any tells or honest information I’ve been able to get from her.”

“I know. How do the two relate?”

“Do you remember what I told you about the way the patients were acting right before we released them from Saint Patrick’s?” She asked in return.

The director nodded, obviously remembering what had at the time seemed a wild story about the patients behaving in an oddly coordinated fashion.

“You still think that little girl is somehow in charge of their entire operation?”

“I know how it sounds,” Jacinta replied. “Under normal circumstances I wouldn’t even consider the possibility...”

“These are far from normal circumstances though…” Jeff interjected. “So why wait this long if you really believe she’s the one?”

Jacinta thought for a moment.

“If I’m right, she’s been fooling us all since day one. She’s calm, in control, has no visible tells, and the face of an innocent. If she really is in charge, and can still operate with that level of composure, I need something major that will crack her in one fell swoop. Chipping away at that type of personality would only make her more determined to resist.”

“And you think your sessions with Victoria have provided you with an angle that will work?” Jeff asked.

Jacinta nodded. “I think so, yes. I might end up just making a fool of myself, but in all honesty, if this doesn’t work I’ve run out of other ideas.”

“All right,” he said after a moment. “I’ll allow it. What’s your play?”

Jacinta raised her eyebrow. “You may as well come and see for yourself. I’ll need a witness in the room while interrogating a minor, anyway.”

“Okay, this should prove interesting.”

A few minutes later Jacinta opened the door to Sarah’s cell and preceded Jeff into the room. The space had been modified into something of a bedroom for the sake of their smallest prisoner, and Jacinta moved to sit at the table across from the young girl, who was idly sketching dots onto a piece of paper.

“Agent Robbins, it’s been some time,” the little girl greeted her as Jeff moved unobtrusively into a corner.

“Give it up Sarah,” Jacinta said forcefully. “Victoria has betrayed you. We know who you are, what you’re doing here, and how to stop you.”

The little girl looked up from her drawing and studied Jacinta for a long moment before returning to the sketch.

“I doubt that,” she remarked without looking back.

Jacinta looked over to the two-sided mirror and clicked her fingers in a prearranged signal to the technician in the next room. A monitor in the corner came to life, showing the bare cell Victoria was confined within. At one side of the table Victoria’s recorded image sat, on the other side, Jacinta’s back. She’d arranged the interviews that way purposefully so that the footage could be altered later.
