Interior design needs differ from the exterior in many ways despite both sharing the same design elements and serving the same purpose of adding beauty and comfort to an area. The interior space would have furniture that shares a similar design; however, the material used for the indoor chair will not last as long if it were to be used on the exterior as the natural elements would cause wear at a much faster rate. Also, the doors begin to serve additional purposes for exterior uses versus interior uses; for the interior, a door is mainly to provide privacy and serve as a border between rooms, whereas exterior doors offer a level of security; therefore, exterior doors are built with more sturdy materials.

Container homes are often built on a smaller scale than other types of houses and outside of municipal areas with more of a rural landscape; therefore, it is often ideal to have the bulk of the living space outdoors. This makes creating a functional and aesthetically pleasing outdoor space vital. The majority of the exterior design is covered under landscaping which comprises the garden, deck, and patio area. Despite encompassing mainly natural elements, landscaping draws on the elements and principles of design that were explored earlier. Landscaping encompasses unity, form, line, color, texture, scale balance, emphasis, sequence, simplicity, and variety.
