Chapter Fourteen

FIVE .... FOUR .... THREE ... TWO .... ONE .... HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!! The pub erupted in shouts and cheers and whoops as everyone turned to each other and kissed and hugged and kissed again. Party poppers exploded all across the room and dozens of helium balloons floated haphazardly towards the beamed ceiling. Suddenly the bar was lined with customers, all wanting a drink, all offering a kiss to Susan and Amanda, and a handshake or a kiss to Eric.

In the pandemonium, Susan smiled and kissed and laughed and hugged everyone who came near her, and yet all the time had never felt so empty or so alone. She had felt compelled to wear a party dress for the evening, and so her habitual jeans were neatly hung up and her phone was buried safely in the bottom of her underwear drawer. She had considered carrying it inside her panties she was wearing but that was too much; she wasn’t that desperate - was she?

In a way it was a relief to be separated from it - separated from the catalogue of erotic text messages that had been fired back and forth over Christmas at every possible opportunity; messages that had driven her to distraction and made her physically ache for him to be inside her; messages that had distracted her from all the usual joys of the season.

She had even given more thought to Harry’s gift than to Eric’s. The latter had got the usual - the latest Manchester United shirt. Eric would always put a football shirt on to sit and watch a game. She had bought Harry a black cashmere scarf and leather gloves, both from Paul Smith. With the exception of holidays, she had never spent as much money on a present for Eric as she just had for Harry. Both she and her husband were very frugal, but the unusual extravagance had thrilled her, even though she knew that Harry was used to such luxury as normal. As the punters clamoured at the bar, she pictured herself wrapping the scarf around his neck and pulling him closer and closer.

‘Happy New Year, love.’ The crush at the bar had eased and Eric had turned to kiss her. Her mind was firmly fixed on Harry and, without thinking, she responded passionately to the kiss, pulling Eric hard against her. A cheer went up around the pub and Susan suddenly realised how intense she had been, and in public. She blushed deeply and pushed Eric away but not before noticing a twinkle in his eye that she had not seen for years; a twinkle she had forgotten; a twinkle she thought had died many years ago.

Three hours later, Susan wearily locked the door and turned to survey the wreckage. They wouldn’t open till midday so she thought she could rely on five hours sleep before tackling the mess. She normally left the bar spotless no matter how late they closed, but tonight she was utterly shattered and just wanted to get into bed.
