At 0.5 mile you reach the canyon rim. From here you have an excellent overview of the surrounding landscape: the forested rise of the Jemez Mountains to the northwest, the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the northeast, and the stout Sandia Mountains to the east. To the southwest the terrain alternates from rim views to canyon bottoms, with a succession of seven different canyons in a 10-mile stretch. This hike crosses into three of these canyons. This greater geographic area is the edge of the Pajarito Plateau, densely layered by a collection of massive eruptions from what is known today as the Valle Caldera. The soft ash has been worn and shaped by the run of water over a million years, like a rake dragging tracks in a dirt hill.
