LIST-BUYING

Definition: Marketers may purchase lists of names and addresses, or email contacts of individuals who are likely to be receptive to a marketing campaign.

Sentence Example: No matter how clever your marketing might be, careful list buying is the most important element.

A AND B TEST

Definition: Marketers often evaluate two competing concepts by comparing their results against similar lists, or by comparing a new concept against one that has been consistently successful in the past.

Sentence Example: After running an A and B test among alumni, the university changed its mascot from a tiger to an anteater.

DIRECT MAIL KIT

Definition: A direct mail kit is a physical marketing envelope sent through the mail to a list of potential buyers. The kit includes promotional information about the product or service, and an order card.

Sentence Example: The difference between a direct mail kit and a junk mail package is a matter of terminology.

BIG DATA

Definition: Big data refers to the massive volume of unstructured information available to companies by electronic means. Finding ways to manage and use big data is a key marketing challenge.

Sentence Example: In his presentation, Mark projected a graph of big data onto a large screen.

ANALYTICS

Definition: The process and technologies that enable marketers to measure performance are known as analytics. Analytics can become overwhelming because of the vast amount of data that is now available and the many tools that exist to evaluate it.

Sentence Example: Our meetings relied heavily on analytics and people rarely shared their individual thoughts.

ACTIONABLE ANALYTICS

Definition: Beyond simply quantifying what’s out there, actionable analytics provide information that can translate into practical and profitable activity.

Sentence Example: The ratio of the cost of a Super Bowl commercial to the number of people who would see it was an actionable analytic for the General Electric marketing team.

HYPERLOCAL

Definition: Hyperlocal refers to marketing that is sharply focused on audiences in specific locations, often by relying on GPS data.

Sentence Example: The hyperlocal marketing campaign targeted families within half a mile of a Trader Joe’s store.

GAMEIFICATION

Definition: Gameification is tactic of integrating game-related elements into a marketing campaign, especially online. For example, users might earn discounts for a product or service by taking part in an online game or survey.

Sentence Example: Gameification can be effective, especially when a cash prize is included

FREEMIUM

Definition: A Freemium is a pricing tactic in which an audience is offered a product or service at no charge for a limited period of time, with a billed upgrade occurring later on.

Sentence Example: Amazon offers Amazon Prime service as a one month freemium.

GROWTH HACKING

Definition: Growth hacking is a strategy for poorly funded startups to gain a following through free outlets such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

Sentence Example: Our only choice for publicity was intense growth hacking with kitten videos.

COLD CANVASSING

Definition: A form of prospecting for any and all prospective buyers.

Sentence Example: If a cold canvas turns up two percent authentic buyers, that’s a big success.

PIPE SMOKER

Definition: An unproductive contact that wastes everyone’s time.

Sentence Example: The pipe smoker loitered in the Apple store playing games on the sample iPads.
