CHAPTER FIFTEEN

13 Below Zero

November 10—11:56 a.m.

JASON DOUBTED ANY OF THEM had slept much the night before. Not since the bodies were found out by Diversion Dike.

The minute the news caught wind of the bodies and the source of the tip, the team was flooded with calls from news stations. And not just local or statewide. They were fielding inquiries from around the country.

Guess it had been impossible to hope that they’d be able to keep it out of the news. Now everyone was looking for their mysterious woman. Of course, to law enforcement she was a person of interest in the murders.

They wanted to find her to ascertain how she knew about the bodies.

The media wanted to find her so they could record interviews and splash sensational stories across the internet and TVs.

Jason needed to find her because he had a feeling she knew something.

Something that could help them prevent a disaster.

He spread out all the information he had put together so far on his desk. Refusing to answer any more calls, he knew the best use of his time was to figure out this crazy puzzle.

Jogging to the break room, he grabbed another cup of coffee and went back to his desk.

With a swig of the hot brew, he studied the papers.

Was there a connection between the pipeline glitches, the state trooper computers’ going down, the false active shooter alert, and the woman’s predictions? She’d made a brief comment about the power going out.

Could a hacker actually accomplish that?

From what he knew of all the systems in place, that would be a stretch. And who would do something like that? An attack of that magnitude had the potential to kill tens of thousands of people. Most hackers were in it for the money. Not blood.

His gut clenched.

Terrorists.

They could kill more people than 9/11.

Scrambling to the secure and encrypted system that linked him to his office in Anchorage, he checked his email for any alerts. Then he sent an urgent email to his friend at the FBI and another to a friend at CISA. Was there any chatter about terrorists launching cyberattacks?

He hated that his brain had automatically gone this route, but they had to be prepared.

“Jason?”

He jerked around to see Misty at his shoulder.

“Wow. You were deep in thought.” She held out her iPad. Pointed to the security video on the screen. “You seem to have a visitor. Should I let him up?”

His stomach plummeted as he looked.

Kirk.

Jason yelled toward the conference room. “Darcie?” He waved a hand at her.

With her brow dipped, she approached. “I saw the security camera. That’s your brother, isn’t it?”

“Yep. I don’t want him in the ops center. Don’t think that’s a good idea to let him see anything.”

“Why don’t we use the pressroom?” Darcie suggested with a decisive step in that direction. “He’ll feel privileged to be allowed in, just not into the offices. I’m going with you.”

“I was going to ask you—thank you. I need someone else’s unbiased opinion of what they see.
