NINETEEN

THE WISE WORDS of Raymond the security guard echo around my brain; “People are scared of difference. Petrified. You show them you have something they don’t understand, and they will fear you, feel threatened by you.”

He’s right, and so is Evelyn. Say nothing, keep the secret, or no matter what good I do, I’ll be the one hunted down and torn apart. If not physically, then online by the raging mobs of people who desperately seek out some kind of conflict or argument every day. You can’t fight the masses, no matter what special abilities you have. There are too many of them.

So I’ll be quiet. Hide my powers. Maybe I should move somewhere else. Mainland Europe, perhaps, where speaking multiple languages isn’t weird and would be extremely useful.

Or somewhere sparse. I think Norwegian is one of my languages. It feels weird, and I have to focus, but if I do … ’En øl, takk’ … I think I’ll get by. Bit cold, though.

Another part of me wants to stay here, show the arseholes who’s boss now. Plus, moving costs money and I don’t have that much when all said and done. I’m good for a few months. Then I’ll need to find something else to make a living. Staying where I am also costs money. Why not capitalise on my newfound skills? But, what can I do?

My phone pings with a text message, and I glance at the screen. Philippa. Shit. I forgot about her with all the drama. I grab the phone.
