LizE had Fergus at her feet and a warm cup of herbal tea in her hands (having enjoyed an excellent shower to boot) when the doorbell rang. As she was sitting in Charlotte’s comfy parlor and never had visitors, it didn’t occur to her to consider answering the door with both Charlotte and William C. at home. Fergus must have had a rough puppy day as he didn’t tear off at the sound of the doorbell but stayed at her feet. She wondered what he could have gotten up to be so tired.

“Hello,” said Will from the doorway. William C. was hovering behind him. Fergus leaped up and dashed at the stranger, barking happily as if suddenly given a shot of adrenaline. “I’ve come at your invitation to see Fergus. I suspect this loud ball of fluff is he.” Will folded his frame down to pet the dog.

LizE could see her cousin’s eyes widen at the notion that she had invited such illustrious personages to his humble parsonage. William C. turned away—she assumed to fetch Charlotte and probably gather refreshments.

She left her feet up on the footstool and watched the scene. The tall man grinned as he scratched a happy puppy on his tummy.

“That’s Fergus. He has the biggest heart, the clumsiest feet, and sheds constantly. You will regret petting him when you see what those black slacks of yours look like in a minute,” she laughed.

“I see that already,” said Will, looking down at his legs. He stood up and came to sit next to her. Fergus trotted behind him and sat between them to maximize his potential scratches. “I needed a break from some work tonight, so I went for a walk and ended up here. I had to take up your challenge, you see … to see this Fergus.” The puppy pricked up his ears at the sound of his name, but since no hand came down to pet him, he closed his eyes again.

“I hope he lives up to your expectations,” LizE said loftily, but with a grin. In answer, Fergus let out a toot, which set them both laughing. They laughed until William and Charlotte came in with a tea tray and cookies.

Silence overcame the room then, and nobody spoke beyond what was needed to share out the treats. Will didn’t speak, and William C. appeared to be at a loss for words when entertaining Ms. de Bour’s nephew in his home.

LizE felt as if a spark had been extinguished, one that had flickered between her and Will as they discovered a little understanding beyond mere politeness. Will left not long after finishing his second cookie and without touching his tea. William C. walked him, not only to the door but insisted on seeing him halfway home.

Charlotte sipped her tea for a few minutes then banged it rather suddenly on her saucer. “I think he’s in love with you.”

“What!” LizE cried, sitting up in her chair and startling Fergus.

“Will Darcy. I think he’s in love with you.
