Mackay left the tent trying to curb uncomfortable thoughts. Were the King and Queen really concerned about the reformed church? Or were their interests solely temporal, consolidating their control of England and Wales? And of Scotland and Ireland too, of course? That would be disappointing if it was true but he did not believe it was true. It could not be true. If the King was willing to show undue mercy to his rebellious Irish subjects, it was probably only for strategic reasons, to ensure that this campaign did not jeopardise the war over the fate of Continental Europe.

He was too deep in his thoughts to notice Talmash hurrying towards him on his way to the general’s tent.

‘Have you heard?’ Talmash paused, his face flushed. ‘The Spaniard and his bog-trotters have turned up.’

‘Here?’ Mackay felt a touch of panic. They were not in a good defensive position in Athenry, indeed had given scarcely any thought to the possibility of an attack.

‘A place called Tuam,’ Talmash said. ‘Fifteen miles north of here. O’Donnell heard that the town was planning to surrender and he sacked it.’

So the semi-mythical Balldearg O’Donnell was real after all, Mackay thought. He had emerged from the miasma of rumour and myth. That would put an end to talk of terms of surrender.
