Chapter Eight
December 20
The following morning began, as my mornings have been lately, with Lo-Lo elbowing me.
“Somebody’s at the door.”
“It’s probably just Bobby,” Anya said.
“No,” Lo-Lo said and got out of bed. She grabbed an old CCNY sweatshirt that Wanda gave me from the chair in my room and I watched her hips as she headed out the door. When the door closed, I closed my eyes, expecting her to come back and say who was at the door.
It took me some time to realize that Lo-Lo hadn’t come back. I got up, got my gun and started for the door before I realized that I should put some pants on.
Seeing me putting my pants on with a gun in my hand, Anya asked softly, “What’s wrong?”
“Lo-Lo didn’t come back.” Anya got her gun from under the pillow. “Wait here,” I said before she got any ideas about coming with me.
When I got to the door, I listened and heard what sounded like giggling. I opened the door slowly and peeked out.
“There he is,” Wanda said.
I looked back at Anya and put the gun on the chest of drawers by the door before going out into the living room. Wanda was sitting on the couch and Lo-Lo was sitting next to her with her legs crossed and a look in her eyes that I’ve seen many times before.
Lo-Lo is so fuckin’ sexy.
“Morning, Wanda. What are you doing here?”
She looked at Lo-Lo. “I told you that he wouldn’t remember,” Wanda said and tapped Lo-Lo’s naked thigh. She looked up at me; her eyes said, she just don’t know. “I should have bet you.”
“You should have,” Lo-Lo said and they both laughed as I sat down in my chair. “Anyway, I was just telling Wanda,” she tapped Wanda’s thigh but allowed her hand to linger for a second and then winked at me, “that we quit dancing at Cynt’s.”
“I told her that maybe we should open a legit club, and her and Anya be the featured act.”
“I think opening a legit club is something that we can discuss long term, but if you're ready to, go back to work.”
“I am. It was boring sitting around all night watching TV,” Lo-Lo laughed and her hand went straight to Wanda’s thigh. “All I wanted to do was get up and dance.” She looked at me. “So I had to find other ways to work off that energy.”
“Tonight when you get to the spot, you tell Cynt that I said to fire the DJ,” I said flatly. Wanda and Lo-Lo laughed and I turned to Wanda. “So now, what are you doing here?”
“I came to pick you up to go to Morris’s Deli,” Wanda said, and I dropped my head in my hands. “You remember, you promised Fat Larry you’d be back today before he let you and Bobby out the door.”
“I remember.”
“And last night I told you I was coming for you this morning on the way to Cielo’s; remember?”
I lifted my head. “No, Wanda. No, I do not remember you saying that you were picking me up in the morning.
