CHAPTER 5

Joining The Fun

Getting Started

The best way to dip your toe into the geocaching pool is to find a friend or relative who has been around the block a few times, following the directional arrow of a GPS unit. They can show you the ropes and get you on your way to hunting down all of that hidden treasure. If you aren’t sure which people in your circles are leading double lives as geocachers, go ahead and use the following information to get the ball rolling.

Step 1 You Must Have a GPS Device

There are a few extremely skilled map and compass people in the world and unless you are one of them, you need a GPSr. Ask around, do a little research, check your budget, and get something that has the features you want. Practice using your new toy and become familiar with its functions. Don’t be afraid to check sites like Craigslist or Ebay for used equipment, which can offer the same experience at a cheaper price.

Step 2 Register with an Online Cache Listing Site

We recommend navicache.com, geocaching.com and opencaching.us. Both sites offer free membership and either FAQs or a help center to answer most questions you’ll have. To sign up you’ll need to come prepared with a username and password and an e-mail account. It doesn’t hurt to try and come up with a clever geocaching name beforehand.

Step 3 Download Cache Information and Hit the Trail

Once you’ve armed yourself with all the information available online, there’s no better teacher than experience.

Step 4 HOLD ON A MINUTE

As excited as you are to start treasure hunting, there’s a few more things we want to share with you to make this whole experience more fun, more rewarding, and SAFE.

Where to Find Help and Information

The above-mentioned websites, navicache.com and geocaching.com, are the most useful resources available for geocachers the world over. Along with the FAQs and help files, both sites provide extensive user forums wherein discussions range to all topics imaginable. You will also find links to geocaching or GPS clubs and online discussion groups. Wikipedia is another excellent source of information, containing several articles and links germane to topics of interest to new geocachers.

Various other websites offer expert (and not-so expert) information, tools, and tips on subjects such as tutorials (youtube.com), coordinate format converters (jeepreviews.com), and outdoor safety information (madcacher.com).

Geocaching Safety

There are a lot of safety factors that come into play when you’re geocaching and many of them depend upon the terrain or environment you are in, weather, traffic, and other influences you cannot control. Let’s take a look at the most important safety information you’ll need to think about.

Personal Limitations

Geocaches are located in nearly every type of terrain on the planet and some require extremely strenuous effort to find. Be sure to read each online cache description carefully to be certain that you AND everyone in your group is up to the challenge. Each cache comes with two ratings; one for the difficulty of the terrain and another for the complexity of locating the cache once you arrive in the general vicinity.
