While not every family feels that kids as young as nine or ten should have a mobile phone, I highly recommend that every tween with type 1 diabetes get one—even if the phone is to be used only for diabetes care discussions and messages. Just like with younger kids with diabetes who have mobile phones, you are always just a call or message away from being able to help your child. Beyond that, though, you’re also giving your tween an important tool to use in developing confidence in taking over her own care, since she knows that she can reach out to you for confirmation of a decision or for help when she has a question.
