Ira considered the lake a jewel of the first order. He could sit there fascinated for an hour or two or three photographing the reflection of Mount Index in the blue waters and the changing shadows on the 2000-foot East Face. But because of the walls that impressed Ira, when you get there, there’s no place to roam, and thus in my opinion the lake has at best modest appeal. Only twice have I hiked it, once upon coming down from the high and dry North Peak of Index, putting mouth to lake, and having to keep squirming forward on my belly as the lake level fell, and the other time in a winter twilight when avalanches were magnificently dreadful. Whatever, the precipice of Mount Index above and the white ribbon of Bridal Veil Falls below so beguile the eye that the feet are compelled to climb up there to discover what unseen wonder lies between them.
