Pray Always
Pray always, and I will pour out my spirit upon you, and great shall be your blessingâyea, even more than if you should obtain treasures of earth.
D&C 19:38
Notice that the Lord uses the word always rather than occasionally in referring to the frequency of our prayers; yet how often do we put a personal, subjective interpretation on the word always? Perhaps we tell ourselves that always means itâs good to pray when we are not too tired or busy or distracted or frustrated. Maybe we think that always means we need to pray only when we are in trouble. Thereâs even a chance that we might rationalize that we should always pray only if we feel worthy to talk to the Lord. But always in the Lordâs vocabulary means just that. Alma knew exactly what the Lord meant by always when he offered us this powerful reminder: âCounsel with the Lord in all thy doings, and he will direct thee for goodâ (Alma 37:37).
A young, faithful missionary serving in a foreign country recently shared this thoughtful and reverent observation: âIn Ether 1:42, the Lord is telling the brother of Jared about the promised land and how they will be brought forth to inherit it. In verse 43 is the why: âAnd thus I will do unto thee because this long time ye have cried unto me.â It isnât always going to be the fact that we prayed in our moment of need that gets us what we need. It is the prayers offered in the good times and in the bad times. It is the prayers we utter even when we donât think God is listening and the prayers uttered in frustration. It is the âalways remembering Himâ part of the sacrament prayer, the constant, unwavering prayers that matter. It always seems to me that in the scriptures the wicked generations are quoted as being âslow to remember the Lord their God.â Let us not be slow to remember. Let us be quick to remember, even when we think that we have been forgottenâ (Elder Reilly Beckstrand).
President Hinckleyâs words are wise and timely on this topic. âBe prayerful. You canât do it alone. . . . You cannot make it alone and do your best. You need the help of the Lord. . . . Ask the Lord to forgive your sins. Ask the Lord for help. Ask the Lord to bless you. Ask the Lord to help you realize your righteous ambitions. . . . Ask the Lord for all of the important things that mean so much to you in your lives. He stands ready to helpâ (Teachings of Gordon B. Hinckley [1997], 468).
