Chapter Ten

Taking care of the chickens and collecting the eggs was the first job Madden gave Clover beyond her chores around the house. He’d meant it when he’d told her she wasn’t his maid. The last thing he wanted was for her to feel like he was taking advantage of her by keeping her indoors and cleaning up after him. A tidy man by nature, much of what he did every day on the ranch involved shit—shoveling it, spreading it, and above all, smelling it. At the end of the day, he liked being able to ensconce himself in a clean home where there wasn’t a trace of shit to be found. But it wasn’t Clover’s job to provide that for him; it was his. Clover had signed a ranch hand’s contract, and so those were the jobs he ultimately planned to give her. But first, he needed to know that she was steady enough on her feet and well enough to handle it without collapsing. Or worse, passing out.

Fortunately, the heatwave that had made her so sick to begin with had broken two days ago, but only in as much as the summer temperatures were no longer hitting record highs from noon through evening. It was still hot, and he was determined to make sure Clover abided by the doctor’s rules.

Writing them down for her, he fixed the list to the wall above the light switch just inside her bedroom door. Anytime she went outside, she was to have a drink in her hand, a hat on her head, clothes covering as much skin as possible, and sunscreen slathered everywhere else. He also kept her close to the house for her first week ‘on the job,’ just in case. For that first week, the chicken coop was her sole responsibility.

By the weekend, he knew she was starting to get bored, not just because she told him so, but because she brought him his belt and asked to be cleared of not one but two demerits at the same time.

The demerits earned for throwing her lotion bottle.

“I earned them together, I can take them together,” was her logic, but he could see an underlying stubbornness in the way she set her chin and practically glared as she waited for him to take the belt from her hand. She wasn’t just telling him that she was fine to work. She was telling him to stop babying her.

So, he did. Bending her over the arm of the couch, he whipped her naked butt until she was bawling and then promptly added barn and horse duties to her roster.

His was a small ranch, and his cattle were his focus. More than not, when he rode out to check on them or move them from one pasture to the next, he did it on the back of his four-wheeler. But he did have a few horses, solely because he loved them and found it relaxing both to care for them and to ride. So
