CHAPTER 22
Lexie Alexandros was sitting in the Advice Center when Gina arrived for work Monday morning. Tina looked smug and Chelsea was buried in paperwork at Shellyâs desk.
Still no sign of the missing nurse. Now even her personal belongings were gone, taken away from the room.
Like she never existed.
âRight on time,â the manager said.
âArenât I always?â
Alexandros stood and motioned for Gina to follow her. When they were out of earshot, she said, âAlan Vasquez wants to see you at ten in Administration.â
âWhat could he possibly want?â
âYou tell me,â Alexandros said.
âI havenât done anything.â
âSo you have no idea why heâd want to see you?â
âNot a clue,â Gina said
The manager was jumpy, tugged at the usual loose strand of hair as she talked. âYou havenât been going around scaring people with more talk about those calls, have you?â
âLexie, we both know you have no faith in me or believe anything I say about this whole business. But at least treat me like a professional. I do know how to talk or not talk to people.â
The managerâs face flushed. âHavenât I always been fair with you, Gina?â She didnât wait for an answer. âBut scaring staffââ
âAnd just whom have I frightened?â
âTina, for one.â
âYouâve got to be kidding. Tina complained about me scaring her?â
âShe didnât use that particular word, but she asked for a transfer. You seem to be the reason.â
Ginaâs hands waved around in the air as she talked. âI canât believe it. She wants out because of me? Did it occur to you that maybe Shellyâs disappearance is what has her all upset?â
âThe thought crossed my mind. But thatâs not what she said.â
âThat woman thrives on bushwhacking people. Didnât even have the stones to talk to me before running like some little kid to mommy.â Gina hugged herself in frustration. âWould you tell that poor frightened thing that even the police donât believe me? Maybe thatâll be enough to calm her fractured nerves.â
Alexandrosâ piercing eyes made Gina uncomfortable as though she had broken some golden rule of behavior that she wasnât privy to.
âAnyway, the administrator will see you around ten. Do you want me to go with you?â
âThanks, mom, but Iâm a big girl. I can handle this all by myself. Itâs not like I havenât confronted the great Alan Vasquez before.â Her stomach was doing flip-flops, but sheâd be damned if sheâd let anyone else know that.
Hell, they need me more than I need them. If I have to get another job, no problem.
The manager placed a hand softly on her shoulder. âIf you want to talk, Iâm here for you.â
âThanks, Ms. Alexandros, but I need to stand on my own two feet. And itâs important for you to know that Iâm not taking any crap from him, or anyone else in Ridgewood.â
The manager flipped the tortured strand of hair out of her eyes and moved in the direction of her office. âCall me. Iâll be here.â
When Gina returned to her desk, she said nothing to Tina, who averted her eyes.
Maybe Iâll be the one to go first, you sneaky little bitch.
