CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

The popular notion that no Mafia wise guy would be stupid enough to set up shop in Washington, DC, ground zero for the FBI, wasn’t lost on Nick Pipitone.

He didn’t consider himself stupid, though. Quite the opposite. He saw DC as a wide-open playing field, virtually no competition.

Plus, he had an ace up his sleeve.

Now, Pip, as he was known to just about everyone, sat in the back office of his Italian Deli and Café. The smell of fresh bread was everywhere, along with rich tomato sauce, garlic and cheeses.

Business was good, supplemented with income produced by everything from heroin and prescription drugs to prostitution and loan sharking. The deli and café were real businesses; people came in and bought food, had coffee, all on the up and up. The only difference was, occasionally a customer would head to the back of the establishment to a steel door. They had to knock, and a camera let the people inside see who was at the door.

Right now, though, Pip wasn’t counting his money. He was thinking about how to best protect it.

One of his associates, related to his ace-in-the-hole, had created a problem for him.

Pip was determined to nip it in the bud.

There was a knock on the door and Pip glanced at the video screen and nodded to one of his men. They opened the door.

A young woman walked in. She had on black yoga shorts, hi-topped black Chuck Taylors and a Rolling Stones t-shirt. She had a pale face, black hair slicked back, and thin lips devoid of any lipstick.

She moved with a liquid grace and Pip once again marveled at the notion that the East Coast organized crime family’s most trusted assassin was this 95-pound twenty-something young woman.

“Ramona,” Pip said.

She slid into the seat across from his desk.

“Is that prosciutto bread fresh? Made today?” she asked.

“Of course,” Pip said, acting insulted.

She nodded.

“We’ve got a problem.”

“That’s what I figured. I wouldn’t be here if we didn’t.”

Pip laid out the sequence of events and where Ramona needed to concentrate her efforts. Namely, the private investigator in DC who’d been contacted about their mutual attorney friend.

“Probably best if the body is never found,” he added.

She smiled and stood to go. “Of course,” she said.

“Don’t eat too much of that bread, it’s fattening,” he said.

“Screw you, Pip,” she shot back.

He laughed.

Even he had to admit, it was a nervous laugh.
