Report #4

I’ll never forget what my mother and I saw while driving home from my high school soccer game. I grew up in a rural part of Florida with little other than cattle fields and ranches for miles. I regularly got lost in a trance whenever we drove home, observing the desolate views. My mother was a single parent and worked long hours to care for both of us, so our combined exhaustion from our long days would usually prompt us to stay quiet to recover from our fatigue.

“What is that?” I shouted as we drove by a field where I saw a large beast with dark hair kneeling beside a dead cow.

My abrupt announcement caused my mom to step on the brakes, as she initially thought I was referring to something on the road in front of us. It wasn’t rare for livestock to get out of confinement and walk out onto the street, so she worried that she had missed something due to exhaustion.

“What? What is it?” she snapped, as startled as ever.

“There’s something back there,” I said. “It looked like it was eating a cow.”

“Oh, come on,” my mother said, insisting that my eyes had played tricks on me. But she did as I asked and slowly reversed the vehicle.

“Stop, there it is!” I announced once the creature was in view. Chills ran up my spine when I observed that the animal had turned its gaze and was staring directly at our car. At first, it was difficult to notice that because of how dark it was outside, and its fur and dark face blended well with the dark environment.

While we were trying to figure out what this thing was, it rose to two feet, and that was when we got a better sense of just how colossal this creature was. Even though it was bipedal, I could immediately tell it was some rare animal. Its arms were much longer than its torso and nearly drooped down to its feet. I had never seen such a muscular build on anything, which made its presence even more intimidating. It was far beyond the fence, but I still felt we were in danger.

That feeling only ramped up when the creature started swaying like an ape. Something about the motion made me think it was about to charge. My mother must have felt the same before shifting the gear back into ‘drive’ and slowly moving forward. The beast started running toward us with unbelievable speed when she gave a little more gas. I couldn’t believe how quickly it approached the vehicle, and the closer it got, the more apparent its massive size became.

“Go!” I shouted, deciding that we weren’t moving fast enough. My mother appeared more preoccupied with the scene in her rearview mirror than ensuring we got away from the thing.
