Chapter 6

"No going back either, kids," Bertha says. "You guys better put your backs against those doors while we work out what to do."

I turn back to see the doors slowly pushing open from the cafeteria side, then fling myself against it. Hawk and I brace our backs against the growing horde gathering at our doors while we watch Bertha, who I was sure had endless strength, start to buckle under the attack on her doors.

"We're trapped," I say.

"Really? I hadn't noticed!" Hawk almost shouts. "Maybe you can tell me we're in a school full of zombies next too! Or would you like to point out that you're a dumbass? I hadn't noticed that either."

The door slips open a little while she's shouting, but she leans back and closes it again.

"I'm sorry..."

We all get quiet for a few minutes. The only sounds are the soulless moans of the things blocking us at both sides, their fists on the metal doors, our breathing, and the rush of blood in my ears.

"Can you get your friends to help us get through?"

"There's too many. Too many of us could end up dead... We have rules... Rules that make sure most of us survive."

The silence fills the hall again for a few moments.

"Okay."

My voice echoes off the walls and tiled floor.

"Okay what?" Hawk asks.

"I've got a plan."

"What kind of plan?"

"We go through the cafeteria."

She looks at me, her mouth opening and closing, her eyes darting around my face, and her eyebrows knitting closer together with every second.

"Are you stupid? Crazy? Wait, I know! You're stupid and crazy! Bertha, this guy is an insane lunatic!"

"I think he's right," Bertha says.

"What? Have you gone stupid too? We just found this guy and he's already infected you with stupid!"

"If we try to go back, we have no idea how much of the halls are crawling with zombies now. We have no way of knowing if the next exit will be blocked too," Bertha says.

"But we know your friends are on the other side of the cafeteria and we might be able to push through what's in there to get to them," I say.

"We'll end up dead. Or worse."

"We'll end up dead if we stay here or try to go back," Bertha says.

Hawk bites her lower lip and looks back and forth between Bertha and me, taking a few deep breaths and digging her heels in harder against the growing pressure on the other side of the door at her back.

"You're both stupid and crazy," she says. "And I'm probably getting dumber just being here with you two. Fine. All three of us might as well die doing something stupid together. Why the fuck not? Might make the whole damn world ten percent smarter!"

"Hold the doors," she says to me and then ducks down to the floor almost too fast for me to slide across both doors and hold back the zombies.

She starts unthreading one of my shoelaces.

"What are you doing?"

"I'm going to tie the handles on Bertha's doors together.
