Chapter Twenty

How Many

Reveille sounded at 0445 hours, and I was still holding the recorder in my hand. I must’ve been exhausted, because I’d fallen right asleep without the chance to travel to the goat shed. Frustrated, I looked in the mirror as I tied my hair in a bun. It had grown a few inches since I’d cut it in week zero and was now out-of-regulation length. That wasn’t the only thing that had changed. Something about my jaw line was firmer, something about my cheekbones more set and something about my eyes said I wasn’t crazy. I finished getting dressed for PT.

Then I felt it. I could always feel that wretched dark mist before I saw it. My mouth filled with the taste of metal, and I had the urge to scratch myself all over as a frigid chill shot down my spine. These were the signs of the mist at its worst. It was the start of week eight, and sometime this week I’d find out if I would become a SERE.

Everyone had left for morning PT except for Santos and me. We were told to stay behind because TI Grange wanted to issue our orders privately.

Dressed in our grey T-shirts and blue shorts, we both sat outside the TI’s office, waiting to be called in. Santos looked over at me, a scream hidden behind her eyes. She knew exactly what he wanted with her, and I knew what he wanted with us both.

“Enter, Moreno.”

Thank the stars these sweat shorts had pockets. Honestly, everything should just have pockets. I’d thought about putting the recorder between my breasts or securing it behind my bra strap, but I was worried he would grab me in one of those places before I had the chance to catch something incriminating. I had tested the sound recording quality from my pocket, and it was slightly muffled, but it worked. It would have to do.

I slid the button on the recorder to the "on" position. My body felt double my normal weight as I tried to stand up from the chair, and, when I tried to move my feet, it was like they were being held down by twenty-pound weights. I took a few painful steps forward and looked back at Santos for motivation. She wouldn’t lift her gaze from the floor.

“We got this,” I whispered to her before I walked into his office. I wasn’t letting her give up. No way.

My stomach lurched at the sight of him sitting there with his paperwork in his hands. The mist of darkness surrounding him parted, opening a clear view of ominous perfection. I took a deep breath and approached his desk, my heartbeat pounding in my chest with every step.

“You’re full of surprises, Beauty Queen.” His voice was low and dark. “When this assignment came across my desk, I must say, I hesitated. The training is ten times tougher than boot camp. I worry about you and that hint of crazy I can tell you have behind those wild green eyes of yours.
