A few hours later, I was unpacked and settled into Kadenâs room. It had been pretty sparse before, like all he'd done was sleep in it, so it was surprisingly easy to fit myself into all the empty spaces heâd left behind. Kaden was still over at the cottage, helping Larkin and Stella get it ready. According to his texts, they'd found a couple of spots where the roof was leaking, and he'd enlisted some pack members to get it fixed so the two women could move in immediately.
This house would feel a lot emptier without them in it, and I would miss seeing them all the time, but I was glad that the two of them had become such close friends and would be able to have a place they could make their own. They both deserved it. Stella had always lived under the shadow of her brother, while Larkin had spent her entire life hiding among the Moon Witches in Lunatera. Hopefully, Stella could help Larkin feel more at home with the Ophiuchus pack, so she could stay here and finally grow into her body properly. She might not be a shifter, but I knew the Ophiuchus would accept her as one of them. We were a pack of outcasts, rejects, and misfits, after all.
Once everything was put away, I pulled out the Sun Witch journal and stared at its leather-bound cover. I'd flicked through the pages over the last few days, but Iâd wanted to save it for a time when I could devote my entire attention to it. The secrets inside of it called to me, secrets I hoped would make me stronger, or at least give me some insight into how to defeat the Sun Witches and the vampires.
I put on my boots and took the journal outside, through the sliding doors that led out to the back of the house. The sun was out, making the snow glisten, and I'd decided if I was going to read about sun magic, I should probably do it under its light. Besides, it had been far too long since I'd been in this forest.
I breathed in the familiar scents as my boots trudged through the snow, heading for the clearing where I'd once trained with Stella and Kaden. Bright sunlight filtered down into it through the canopy of trees, and I took that as a good sign as I sat on the ground and flipped the journal open to the front page.
The writing inside was neat, but a little cramped, as though the personâBrea, I assumedâwanted to pack as much into the pages as possible. The words were all in ancient Greek, and though I'd studied it with my mother until I was proficient, there were still a few things I didn't recognize. I thought about asking Larkin to look through the journal with me, but decided that felt too much like betraying the trust of my new Sun Witch allies.
I had Sun Witch allies. Huh. What a strange thought.
