33 Ramón
Sharkey drove to the bar where Ramón used to hang out. It was a place where musicians gathered to jam together. This morning it was quiet and hardly anyone was there. He walked to the back of the bar and in the dim light saw Ramón sitting having a beer. He was looking at the newspaper.
âHey Ramón, howâs it going?â The handsome man looked up suddenly. He looked older and his face was filled out more than it had been a couple years ago when Sharkey had last seen him.
âSharkey, sit down, Iâll buy you a beer. Itâs good to see you.â
âCoke will do today, man,â Sharkey said with a grin. âIâm on duty.â
Ramónâs dark eyes were bloodshot. âDo you know who killed Khloe?â
âNo, we donât know yet. We are trying to piece it together. There are few clues. We usually have a crime scene and some context to direct us. All we have is a body found floating for a day. The sea washes away a lot of clues. We are talking to everyone she knew. How long have you been back in town?â
âI flew in the morning of the service.â
âJust for the record, where were you on the night of the 10th of June?â
âOrlando. I live in Orlando and I work seven nights a week in a couple of clubs. You can check with my boss. I flew in yesterday, for the service.â He swore in Spanish as a man walked by. He continued his conversation in Spanish. Sharkey followed suit. âShe was such a good lady. She had a beautiful spirit. We could talk about almost anything. We used to go out back during a break sometimes and just talk. She used to tell me what a beautiful little girl Ramie was, and what a talented artist she thought Ramie could be with the right teacher.â
Sharkey said, âWe didnât know what happened to make you leave so suddenly.â
âI had no choice. Lena made it clear how she felt about me and Khloe working together. We were not having an affair, but Lena, she was jealous and unreasonable. She told me she would take Ramie and I would never see her again if I didnât stop working with Khloe. I tried to explain that we were just friends and nothing else. She flew into a rage and started to make wild threats. She said you end it or I will. She has a bad temper. I was afraid that she might hurt Khloe and all this was going to hurt my daughter, so I just left town. I have been keeping an eye on them through Bruce. He lets me know whatâs going on here on a regular basis. When he called and said that Khloe had been murdered, I can tell you that the first thing I thought of was what Lena had said.â
âJust exactly what did she say?â
âShe said that she would kill the little bitch if I didnât quit working parties with Khloe. She said that Khloe had been a thorn in her side ever since she came to town.
