CHRISTMAS COMBAT

It was the return of the blustery winds that Colin Reynolds felt when he next regained his cogency. He looked around to see that he was back in the blizzard-ridden environment of the Maine wilderness that he called home. It had just slipped past midnight at this point, making it the most nightmarish Christmas that he, and most other people, had ever experienced.

His rifle was in hand, and he determined to make the most of the five shots it had left in its chamber. Not knowing what to expect he looked around only to see himself confronted by a tall figure partly concealed by the darkness of the hour and the snow-saturated winds. He pointed his piece at the entity, but it didn’t flinch. This concerned the young man at first, until closer scrutiny revealed that the Ghost of Christmas Future was still present.

“Oh, it’s you,” he said. “But… why did you bring me back here? I can’t help my Uncle Ned in the woods!”

As usual, the Spirit made no verbal response. Instead, it pointed to the wilderness directly behind him. Colin turned to see two smaller figures rush out of the darkness and into the snow-covered clearing where he stood. His weapon was aimed in their direction, and the two newcomers stood back. He could see that they carried rifles of their own.

“Whoa, whoa! Don’t shoot, mister!” one of the two interlopers shouted.

It was the voice of a young boy, one that Colin recognized upon reflection, despite having only heard it a few times in the past.

“Are you… Dillon Lumpkin?” he asked.

“Yes! And you’re Colin Reynolds, right?” Dillon queried.

“I am! And who is your friend here?”

“I’m not his friend, I’m his cousin,” Gavin Lumpkin stated with an irritated tone.

“Okay, fine,” Colin replied. “What are you two doing out here at night? There are some dangerous things out and about tonight.”

“No shit, Sherlock!” Gavin rejoined. “Our other cousin Laurel and our two favorite uncles were just killed in front of us by this monster bitch!”

“Huh?”

“Gryla!” Dillon shouted. “She is some type of old lady that is actually a monster from Icelandic folklore! But she’s real, and she has this big monster cat with her, that’s also from folklore. We’re not lying, Colin! You gotta believe us! Please…!”

“I do believe you,” was the young adult’s surprisingly affirmative response.

“You… do?”

“Yes. There’s some strange seasonal energy converging on this location, and… my Uncle Ned and two of his friends were taken by the Krampus tonight.”

“You mean… he’s here too?” Dillon said through startled eyes.

“Yeah… he is.”

“Oh, shit… that’s wonderful,” Gavin noted while covering his face in despair.

“And this guy is also here,” Colin added while pointing to the Spirit, whom the boys at first overlooked due to it being cloaked in the shadows.

“Oh my god!” Gavin yelled while pointing his rifle at the Ghost of Christmas Future.

The Spirit remained as unconcerned as ever in the face of a firearm pointed in its direction.

“Is that… the Grim Reaper?” Dillon asked while shivering, and not entirely because of the cold wind.
