Adam was waiting for us on the porch, watching with an unreadable expression as Zev and I exited the car. The evening sun had already drifted below the New York skyline, and everything was bathed in a mix of golden yellow and shadows. Zev and I would have arrived earlier, but it had taken some time for us to get around to leaving the apartment with our clothes on.

Days, to be exact. We had spent over forty-eight hours in each other’s arms, naked, touching, eating just enough to keep us from passing out. Being with him was an all-consuming desire, and I found it difficult to pretend I didn’t want—need—him again in that moment, present company be damned. Our clothes felt stifling and unnecessary, my hands yearned to be bare against his flesh, and my lips were especially dry without his sweat adorning them.

But my older brother was standing ten feet away, and I was sure I had just become his greatest disappointment. His dark gaze was guarded, something he and I had practiced for years, knowing it would help us within the business world in which we were destined to live. Our father had the best poker face of all his business associates and always cleared them of cash during their gambling. He rarely lost a deal or acquisition and never missed a deadline. He put the fear of Santiago in his employees, and Adam and I had strived our entire lives to be just like him.

I never thought all that hard work would turn out like this—brother against brother, endless glare against unyielding stare.

Clearly, we had more practicing to do because I clocked the tick in his jaw as he gritted his teeth, and his keen eyes didn’t miss my hands tightening into fists at my side.

“Zev, come here,” Adam demanded through his clenched teeth, voice a low rumble.

My dark angel was close enough for me to see a frown form across his face, but when he opened his mouth to protest, I cut him off. “It’s fine, mi luz. Go.”

Adam’s glare deepened at my words. Only once Zev was beside him and Adam had stepped protectively in front—which was a funny sight, considering how short and lean he was compared to the literal killer behind him—did Adam speak. “The fuck, Ben? What the fuck did I just see happen in that car?”

“You saw what you saw.” Trying to ease the tension between us, I worked my fists open and closed, attempting to relax. I held my chin high and kept my gaze on Adam. I didn’t dare back down or show weakness. If he were any of our other brothers, he would have given in to me already, no matter how appalled, but he wasn’t. Adam and I were the big brothers. The fierce protectors, the leaders and role models. At least, we were supposed to be.

“¿Has perdido la cabeza? Are you crazy? What the fuck?”

I took a step closer as Adam heaved with rage.
