I’m still in Cassie’s room. Still in front of the vanity. Still holding the picture. But there are slight differences. I’m sitting in the chair instead of standing, and out of the corner of my eye, I can make out Peter in the mirror. He looks even more upset than when he opened the door for Brody and me this morning.

“I let you down,” he says to the photo. “I let you both down. Kell—I should have been a better dad. I will be a better dad. Just let her be safe. Let her have run away and come home to me. I’ll fix things. I will, I promise. It’s my fault she takes off. It’s my fault she doesn’t have the answers she wants. It’s just, when I look at her, I get so…”

He puts the picture on the desk and rubs his hands over his face. “You know,” he continues, “it’s not even the big things. I’m used to those now. It’s the tiny similarities. The way her left eyebrow goes up when she’s in deep concentration. The way her nose scrunches if she eats something that has cilantro. The six sneezes every single time. All of it makes me see you. Makes me miss you all over again. And I love you, Kell, but I am still so mad at you. You knew. You knew you were going to die if you had her. You saw it, but you didn’t care. You wouldn’t listen. You left me. You left us.”

He closes his eyes and tilts his head back, a tear running diagonally down his face.

“But it’s not her fault,” he continues. “I know that. I’ve always known that. And I try to be strong, but I’ll try harder.” He opens his eyes and picks up the picture again. “You were right, you know. She is special. She is amazing. She will do big things. As long as she is okay. Please be okay. Please just have run away. I spoke to Phil, and he said—” More tears slip down his face. “I can’t lose her, too. I’ll make it up to her. She wants to know about our families, her heritage? I’ll tell her, I’ll tell her whatever she wants. I’ll make up with my parents. I’ll let her get to know them. I know you wanted that. I’ll be a better dad. I’ll go back to therapy. I’ll find someone to help. I know you told me I’d need it. It was just easier not to think about it, but I’ll do it. As long as she comes back to me. As long as I have a chance.”

He stands up, and the picture drops onto the seat.
