Confronting Your Husband

No matter how angry you are, or what you know—or think you know—or how you received the information about the affair, I urge you to use good sense and reason in all things and actions. Under those volatile circumstances, when a person feels so enraged and so violated, it’s much easier to act irrationally— still knowing what’s right and what’s wrong, mind you, but for the moment, simply not caring. Aristotle aptly noted, “Anyone can become angry—that is easy. But to be angry at the right person, to the right degree, at the right time, for the right purpose, and in the right way—that is not easy.” Don’t be tempted to put yourself and your spouse in a perilous situation. While you think you might be able to handle what you may find, you might not. After all, you are only human. You know your anger will pass, but murder and mayhem are permanent.

Avoid violence and disaster by moving forward to face your husband with dignity and discipline. When you have regained your composure and feel ready for a talk, pick a psychologically safe and physically secure place for the two of you to meet and discuss the matter at hand. When you arrive, you will be ready, poised, and able to articulate your feelings and whatever wishes you have for yourself, your family, and your future.
