“Jason, we didn’t leak this. No one in my team has leaked this.”

“Well, someone has! This is fucking disaster.”

Jess has to really hold her tongue, and stop herself from saying that if Rupert just admitted it, all of this would be over, but she takes a breath. “Listen Jason, I promise you that nothing has come from our end and we are doing all we can to solve this case and either charge your client or drop the investigation.”

“Well, I suggest, Detective, that you look at your team a lot more closely because someone has leaked it. I don’t know what sort of operation you are running over there but if this isn’t sorted soon and keeps dragging out over you and your team’s incompetence then I assure you a giant fucking lawsuit will be heading your way.”

And with that there’s a click and the phone goes dead. Jess sat in her office for a good hour fuming over the phone call until Andrew came in and said to her that she should really go home, she protested and said she was going to stay but he pretty much shooed out the door. When she got home her son was waiting for her, she had refused to go to bed until she had seen him. She read him a bedtime story and for brief ten minutes she was just having fun reading a story, and doing silly voices and laughing away, she didn’t worry about the case or anything until the bedroom door shut.

When she got back down stairs her mum had made her dinner, and even though she wasn’t that hungry she couldn’t say no to her mum and started eating and immediately felt a bit better. Jess and her mum chatted for about an hour that night about the case and her mum didn’t say anything, she just let Jess talk and at the end it she said the best thing that Jess had heard all day. “Jess, my darling, I could tell you a thousand times over not to stress about this or don’t work too hard and don’t stay late, but I know you won’t listen. So, all I’m going to say is this – I believe that you will solve this case and I’m proud of you no matter what happens, sweetheart.”

She’s thought of it a lot since that conversation and it’s helping her stay strong and keep going. She’s been at the office non-stop since Rupert’s name was released, the new information that her team got pushed the case in a different direction. The gloves theory that her team have been working through the last week doesn’t conclusively rule out Rupert because he could have disposed of them at any point from the murder to the police turning up, so they have been searching bins, waste sites and even the drains underneath the crime scene. She has a nagging feeling at the back of her mind that Rupert is telling the truth but she’s not saying anything because they need hard evidence that it isn’t him.
