Phoenix’s head snapped up along with Crimson’s at the sound of the car horn. Morgan. The thought and the pleasure went through her before she took another breath. She was up and out of the stall before the improbability of her thought hit her as she recalled too well the coldness in his voice last night.

The smile on her face dimmed, her steps slowed.

She recognized the slim, beautiful woman standing by the luxury vehicle immediately. Wind-tossed strands of Sierra’s wavy black hair swirled around her shoulder. A moment of unease hit Phoenix. What if Sierra came to ask her to leave? Andre would be livid. He lived off the goodness of others, seldom incurring any expenses. He had perfected the art of ingratiating himself to others so much that they acted as if they thought he was doing them a favor by living with them or on one of their properties.

It was only as Phoenix got closer that she saw Sierra’s mouth was curved into a warm smile. Which somehow made less sense.

“Good morning, Phoenix,” Sierra greeted her, stepping away from the SAV to meet her. “I rang the doorbell and when there was no answer, I thought I’d try the horn in case you were riding nearby.”

“Good morning, Sierra. Sorry. I wasn’t expecting anyone.” Phoenix clutched the sketch pad to her chest, still unsure why Sierra was there.

Sierra waved her words aside. “My fault entirely. I should have called. I had some time on my hands before my first appointment, and I thought I’d take you up on your offer to stop by and see Crimson.”

She was offering friendship, but Phoenix wasn’t sure the other woman would feel that way once she spoke to Morgan. It had been easy to see what a close-knit, loving family they were. “Have you spoken to Morgan lately?”

“We had dinner at Mama’s house last night,” Sierra answered easily. “Luke, my oldest brother, and his new wife, Catherine, were there. Why?”

Her grip on the tablet tightened. “We’re not seeing each other anymore.”

Whatever she was expecting, it wasn’t the elegant shrug of Sierra’s shoulder. “If I had to stop being friends with the women my brothers stopped dating, I’d be very lonely.”

While her words were comforting on one hand, on the other they weren’t. “Morgan dates a lot, I guess.”

“Not as much as Brandon or Pierce, but more than Luke before he married. He’s very selective and picky.” Sierra wrinkled her nose. “Our Morgan is a perfectionist. You should see his house. Not even a magazine out of place.”

“I’m not very neat,” Phoenix murmured.

Sierra smile broadened. “Neither am I.”

They grinned at each other.

Suddenly Sierra put her hand on her flat stomach. “Sorry. My stomach is telling me to feed it.” She looked forlorn. “Brandon’s not open for breakfast. I’d go by his place and wake him up, but he’s a grouch before nine.”

“I can cook.” The words just slipped out of Phoenix’s mouth.

“Great!” Taking Phoenix’s arm, Sierra steered her toward the house.
