“Gosh, Dee!” Caelan chuckled. “If my arse wasn’t still stinging from that fuck earlier, I’d believe you were beginning to go straight.”

“Huh?” Dean jerked up from his thoughts and blushed to what felt like a deep beet-root red when Caelan’s words registered. He glanced around quickly, but the other people in the small restaurant didn’t seem to have overheard anything. If they had, they were doing an excellent job hiding it. “What makes you say that?”

Sighing, Caelan rolled his eyes. “Aw, come on. The way you’ve been staring at that waitress ever since we arrived? If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you were harbouring improper thoughts.”

“What? You think I’m eyeing her up?”

“Well, you’re certainly staring at her a lot.”

“I, uh…” Dean shifted uncomfortably. Caelan was right. Of course he was. He couldn’t seem to stop looking at the woman, stupid though that was. “Sorry. I guess she just reminds me of someone, is all.”

“Really?” Caelan asked and turned his head to find her across the room. Dean felt like slapping himself, and he deserved it to be hard. That had been the entirely wrong thing to say because now he had drawn Caelan’s attention towards her, which was just what he had been trying to avoid.

Caelan regarded the waitress with a frown. “Well, admittedly, she does look a bit familiar, but I have no idea who she reminds me of. It’s probably just her type. I figure there are a lot like her around here. This whole place seems to be filled with blond, blue-eyed people.” He smirked. “At least that means I fit in. Apart from having green eyes, that is. Aw, whatever.” Chuckling, he raised his glass and took a sip.

Dean stared at him in disbelief. No, Caelan kept a perfectly straight face, so he couldn’t have been joking. And if he had figured out the truth, he most definitely wouldn’t be joking anyway—which meant that he really didn’t have a clue how close he had come.

Apparently the waitress, on her part, had noticed them staring at her and took it as her cue to get up and approach their table. Dean would have loved to give her a signal, but he was sitting right in Caelan’s line of vision, and something that blatantly obvious would certainly have clued his husband in.

“Hey, guys,” she greeted cheerfully. She stopped in front of their table at just about the appropriate distance, but her body was noticeably angled to Caelan, and her eyes seemed to glue themselves to him exclusively.

“How is everything?”

“Uh…just fine, thank you,” Caelan replied, not really trying to hide his bewilderment. His gaze flicked to meet Dean’s in a wordless comment. It wasn’t hard for Dean to read his partner’s thoughts. They had been getting served by another waitress, so technically she was crossing a boundary by coming to their table. Seemingly realising her mistake, she looked at Dean and, clearly finding the answer she must have been dreading to see on his face, she lowered her head.
