Danica winced as she listened to the teens on the stage.

“I suppose it was too much to ask for all three teams to go smoothly,” JD murmured from his seat beside her.

“Yeah. Apparently.” After a particularly bad attempt at one of the songs, she got to her feet and held up her hand to stop them. “Okay, guys, this isn’t working.”

The teens frowned at her as she approached the stage.

“I did practice,” the girl on the piano said.

“Oh, you’d all be doing just fine…if you were playing alone. The problem is, you need to be playing together. In unison.” Danica placed her hands on her hips. “Are you even listening to each other?”

The kids glanced around and shrugged.

Danica turned to JD, and he could see the exasperation on her face. “JD, can you come up here with your guitar?”

With a nod, JD grabbed his instrument and got to his feet, walking to where Danica stood.

“I want you guys to go sit down on the front row.” As she waited for them to settle down, JD heard her say, “We could really use Dalton for this.”

He didn’t ask her to clarify because he knew what she was talking about. She moved to stand behind the keyboard and pulled the mic closer to her. JD took a spot at one of the other mics.

Without saying anything to him, Danica began to play a song they’d used for worship a lot back when they’d done it in high school. It was like a flash back in time, but he didn’t allow it to distract him since he knew the point Danica was trying to make. Listening to her play the intro, JD was able to pick up the chords and began to strum along. When she began to sing, JD quickly followed along with the guitar, making sure to keep in time with the piano.

Throughout the song, she slowed things down then sped things up, repeating the chorus a couple of times, obviously expecting him to keep up with minimal instruction from her. It was a bit of a challenge since he hadn’t played a lot in the past few years. It was only his memory of playing with Danica so much in the past that allowed him to keep up with her.

When Danica finally ended the song, she just stood at the keyboard for a moment, her attention on the teens. JD knew the weight of that gaze, so he wasn’t surprised to see the kids begin to shift under it.

Finally, Danica said, “Did any of you hear the difference?” They all nodded then got to their feet when Danica waved them forward. “Let’s try this again.”

JD left the stage, but Danica stayed up there with the teens as she explained who was going to lead and how the others were going to follow. After they started to play, Danica wandered among them, encouraging them to keep the rhythm.

With her attention focused on the students, JD had the rare luxury of being able to observe Danica in action.
