CHAPTER TWENTY

The tunnel vanished, and I stood again on the field. The snow didn’t fall on me, though I saw it falling around me. A few other students were there on my same plane, and they greeted me.

“Wicked,” Iblis said, joining me. “The rest of the class is here somewhere, but we can’t see them.”

“What happens if we keep going through the tunnel?” I said, enthralled.

“We could all stand in different dimensional planes, I guess.”

I tried to imagine it and couldn’t. I looked at the ground and called forth the tunnel again.

Doing it a second time was easy. This time, I didn’t take one step forward. I took three steps backward and then stopped.

When I looked around me, I was alone. I’d phased out of sync with my classmates. But not with Arcadia. It was snowing on me again. The academy buildings showed in the distance. Yet I knew Arcadia wasn’t on the same plane as the rest of humanity, which meant I was still on a celestial plane. How far would I have to go to hit the mortal frequency?

I called forth the tunnel again, and this time I skipped ahead several feet.

I gasped out loud when I stepped out and looked around. There was no sign of the academy, of the library tower, of the Fields of Synergy, even though I knew I was standing right on them. Instead I stood in a wide, empty field. It snowed here, too, falling peacefully on my shoulders.

And there were people. Several small buildings dotted the horizon, and humans milled about, tending to animals, pulling thick coats and scarves closer around their faces. Where was I? It had never occurred to me to wonder where on earth Arcadia was located. The academy had three campuses. Were they all near each other, and we couldn’t see each other because of the frequencies?

Something else caught my attention, and I stiffened, going completely still.

A man stood talking to three of the humans, directing them and pointing into the trees. His being emanated Darkness, and even from here I saw the Temptare sniffing around the humans.

But he was not human. His aura was not mortal. He was a Fallen.

Were the humans Underlings? I could see him, but could he see me? Were we on the same frequency? Was it coincidental he was so close to the academy at Yishuv, or did he even know? I took a half step back.

He turned my direction, as if the movement had caught his eye. He scanned the area, even took a few steps my direction. He was too far for me to see his features clearly, but if I could see him, surely he could see me.

Except he didn’t appear to. I exhaled as he turned around and disappeared into the small cabin on the far side of the field.

But before I could relax, a second Fallen descended, drifting to the earth and lifting his face as if sniffing the air. His features were hazy, as if he hadn’t quite taken human form, but something about him struck me as—familiar.
