CHAPTER XXV
The Cards Interpreted
I was still sitting near the telephone, lost amidst the wilderness of my own thoughts, when Burke returned a full half-hour later.
And I was sitting there too, when he bid me good night, fifteen minutes after thatâregarding me most troubledlyâand went to his bedroom.
And still I sat, waiting, waiting, waitingâ
It seemed an eternity while that phone was yet to ring. It seemed thatâ
And it rang!
I sprang to it.
And it was, of course, Dr. Deventer on the wire.
âWell, Mr. Kew,â he began cheerily, âI have worked out the indubitable interpretations of those three cardsâlaid out, that is, as they are!âto their most ultimate possible concrete point.â A note of puzzlement, however, came into his voice at this juncture. âThough, my boy, some very odd features are to be found in the interpretation which refuse utterly to conform to the conditions as outlined by you, under which the symÂbolic message wasâerâputatively sent you. Though maybe they do conform, at that! For instance, son, is this Chinese girl a former peasantâperhaps educated in astronomy in some Kuomingtang Government School?â
âGood God, no, Dr. Deventer. Why?â
âWell, because, son, there comes forth, absolutely and positively, in the interpretation, that she is addressing somebody âabove her.â Are you above her in some aspectâother, say, than social?âor with respect to some false idea she possesses as to social relationship?â
âOh no, no,â I retorted quickly. âSheâshe is above meâin every respect. She is wondâThat is, I am not above herâhoweverâwellâI think, at that, I understand where maybeâyesâshe would consider me above her. Yes! Itâsâitâs purely a case of relativity. Itâbutââ And in a very delirium of anxiety, now that I had heard even that fragment of what those cords implied, I pressed him. âThe full interpretation, Dr. Deventerâwhat is it?â
âWell,â he warned, âput into words, it is still highly cryptic. You may have to work upon it yourselfâin that formâto clarify it further.â
âYes, yes,â I said. âIâI will do thatâall of that. And pleaseâthe interpretation.â
âWell, my very impatient young friend,â he said with a sigh, âit runs perhaps about thusâwhen couched in languageâEnglish language, anyway. But I will repeat it slowly.â And as one groping here and groping there, for the clumsy tools known as words, which in this case most nearly stood for aspects of thought, he repeated: ââNever overlook utterlyââor,â he added, âânever fail to perceiveâ orâorâyesââto keep in mindââyesâand now comes, son, that relativity allusion, as you so aptly term itââin your high-above-me spotââorâor âin your exalted stationââor even, son, possibly, âfar aloof stage of being and mindââhowever, Iâll go on.â And he continued: âthat we hereâânot just âI,â Mr. Kewâthat is another puzzling thing: the plurality aspect of âself enters the picture thereâhoweverâto repeatââthat we here are blessedââor âendowedâ or âfortunedââyesââwith the power to seeââno, Mr. Kewâto actually âseeâââvisualizeââyesââanyoneâââhim-her,â in double aspect, my boyâso let us call it just: âone out of manyââanyway, Iâll continueââwho thinks ofââor âuponâââupon usââor who âgazesâââsurveysâââcontemplatesâââus visibly.â The thought continues there, Mr. Kew, in duplication with that premise âNever forget,â to a new clause âand can receive Thought.
