CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

SILAS

Sheriff, Quinn, and Tonkin showed up, first. The nearest hospital was too far away to send an ambulance without an official request from the Sheriff’s Department, so they had to be on scene to evaluate the damage.

Sheriff gave Silas a long look when he saw the damage he’d done to Bruce, but Silas wasn’t ashamed. He’d only protected what was his.

“I’ll call the ambulance,” Sheriff said. “Tonkin, Quinn, y’all work on examining and questioning the witnesses.”

Quinn, who had veered away from the bloody sight of Bruce, jumped. He stood beside a bookshelf lined with Koa and Hazel’s romance novels.

“Yes, sir,” he said, with pink cheeks. He approached the couch where Koa and Hazel sat wrapped around each other.

At some point during the hour-long wait for help, Hazel woke up, and Koa had pressed himself into his side in a half hug, half huddle that made Silas jealous and concerned, but everything about them screamed, stay away, and Silas had.

Now, with Quinn and Tonkin standing in front of them, Silas’s concern mounted at their lack of reaction.

“We need to speak to both of you individually,” Tonkin snapped. “Mr. Tait, please come with me.” Koa didn’t respond. Like he hadn’t heard Tonkin.

Quinn tried next, with a gentler tone. “I know you’ve both had a hard day, but we need to get your statements so that we can figure out what happened and how best to help.”

Still, neither of them moved. Silas worried that they had gone into shock. He moved to the couch to kneel in front of Koa. He reached out to run his fingers across Koa’s cheek. He cringed away from him, and Silas’s heart sank.

He stood to address his fellow deputies. “I don’t think—”

A knock came at the door, before it was pushed open. Three men strode inside, two were dressed in black, with severe expressions. The third wore a tailored suit, had perfectly styled hair, and possessed an air of authority that everyone in the room felt. He had an Asian cast to his features, backed by his jet-black hair and the oblique set to his eyes.

“Mayor Jeong.” Sheriff paused in his call. “What are you doing here? This is an active crime scene.”

Rhys gazed around the cabin, his face hardening as he took in everything and everyone, before finally landing on Silas. Silas met his eyes, hoping the grim set of his mouth expressed everything that he couldn’t say in front of the others.

Rhys looked back at the Sheriff. “I came to support Silas. I’m sure you know that he’s personally involved with these men.” He waved to Koa and Hazel.

They had finally stirred, turning to see who had entered. They watched Rhys and his men with two completely different expressions. Koa’s lips were pinched, and his gaze was narrowed, while Hazel’s eyes were wide as he took in the three men. Silas was becoming more and more certain that he had a concussion to go along with his now crooked nose.

Sheriff shook his head. “I can appreciate you wanting to support your friend, Rhys, but you can’t—”

“I can.
