Chapter Eighteen
Apparently, no warnings are given before the police snap oneâs mug shot.
There was barely time to register that she was standing in front of the height chart, when a camera flash blinded Melody. With the starburst still blooming in her eyes, a female officer shuffled Melody along a few feet to the right where they flipped open an inkpad and asked for her full name. This was really happening. Sheâd been arrested for kicking someone in the junk. âIs this something I will have to report to potential future employers?â
âThatâs a question for the judge.â The officer waited for Melodyâs escort to uncuff her. âThumb, please.â
Melody barely had time to hold out the requested digit when Trina was ushered into the processing room behind her daughter, with the air of a middle schooler who had been sent to the principalâs office. Again. âWell, Iâm back, Officers! How many of you are secretly going to ask for an autograph this time?â Trina singsonged to the room, in general, her bare feet slapping on the floor with every step. âGuess I canât really fault you for taking Santaâs side this close to Christmas. If you piss him off, he might not bring you a lifeâand you all desperately need one. Something to occupy your time besides arresting the local legend.â
âYou were a legend when you moved here. Now youâre just annoying,â drawled the officer holding her cuffed wrists behind her back. âLook straight at the camera.â
She batted her eyelashes as the flash went off. âPretend all you want. I see your Steel Birds tattoo peeking out.â
The officer cleared his throat hard and yanked on the sleeve of his uniform, covering up a few ink spikes. âTeam Octavia,â he muttered.
âYeah, that tracks.â Trina rolled her eyes. âA couple of serial killers of joy. Sheâd probably love you.â
âReally?â
Trinaâs head fell back on a groan. âFor the love of God, put me in a cell. Iâd rather be locked up than have this conversation.â
âMom,â Melody ventured. âLetâs just get through this without them adding any charges, okay? Iâm sure Beat is already working on having us released.â
âOh. Yeah. Speaking of Octavia fangirls.â Uncuffed now, Trina averted her gaze and slapped her thumb down into the inkpad, but not before Melody saw a trace of hurt. âMy own kid. Unbelievable.â
âIâm not a fangirl.â Melody would have failed a lie detector test on that one, but Trina didnât need to know that. âIâve only met her once.â
âIs she still a petty bitch?â
âMom.â
The officer stepped into Melodyâs line of vision. âI watched the whole meeting live, if you donât mind me saying so. My wife and I agreed that you really impressed her. And I canât imagine thatâs an easy thing to do. I mean, she really seemed just taken with you, Mel.â
âMel?â Trina kickedâkickedâthe officer in the back of the leg. âYou are not on a shortened-name basis with my daughter.â
Instead of outraged, the man merely seemed smug. âThatâs what everyoneâs calling her, Trina. Magnificent Mel.â
What?
Trina sputtered.
