Chapter Nine

Gina slammed the door and fell back against it. Tiny blinking stars obscured her vision. Red. Gold. Silver. She blinked, frantically trying to clear them away.

Whatthehell, whatthehell, whatthehell?

“They’ll be okay. It looked worse than it was.” The man standing next to her gave her shoulder a pat. “Um, do want me to get you a glass of water? You should sit down.”

“Yes,” she answered, not certain what she was responding to. Did she want water?

Or did she want to sit down? She let the man help her across the living room. He turned her and something soft bumped the back of her legs.

“There you go. Have a seat. I’ll be back in a sec.” She bent her legs, letting herself plop onto the couch, and covered her face with trembling hands.

What the hell had she’d seen outside? Cyr and Magus, on their front yard, pounding each other with their fists, eyes glowing red, like a cat’s, faces contorted into masks so hideous she barely recognized them.

No. She’d seen nothing. Yeah, that was it. She was asleep right now, having a nightmare. Yes, a nightmare. She pulled in a long, deep breath and slowly let it out.

At least the stars seemed to have faded. A good sign.

“Here you go.” It was a male voice, the man who’d walked her home. One of the guys who lived next door. She didn’t remember his name.

“I’m going to wake up any minute now and this nightmare’ll be over. Right?”

“Uh, sure.”

She slowly peeled her fingers away from her face and tipped her head in the direction of his voice. He was holding a glass of water, looking like he had no clue what to do next. “Thanks.” She accepted it, took a sip and handed it back to him.

With his free hand, he patted her shoulder. “So you’re okay now, right? You’re not going to pass out or anything?”

“I’m pretty sure.”

“Good.” He set the glass on the side table, next to her grandma’s prize Capodimonte piece. “I’d better get back to the house. Gotta check on Cyr and Magus.”

“What happened? Are they going to be okay?”

“Oh yeah, they’ll be fine. Like I said, it looked worse than it was. Don’t worry.”

“Okay. Thanks for walking me home. I wasn’t feeling very good there for a few minutes.”

“Not a problem.” He gave her one last look then stood up. “I’ll see myself out.

Don’t get up.”

She stood anyway and regretted it immediately.

“Thanks for checking on Gina. How is she?” Magus didn’t wait for Rane to step into the room before asking. Since he’d been hauled inside, he couldn’t stop thinking about her, worrying about what she’d seen, what she might be thinking.

Rane gave a little shrug. “Shaken up, but she’ll be okay.” Magus scrubbed his hands over his aching, bruised face, his fingers pressing lightly at the sorest spot, above his left eye. “Does she hate us?”

“I don’t think so.”

“Fear us?”

“Possibly. I think she’s confused.”

“Maybe I should go talk to her.” Magus pushed against the mattress, propelling himself to his feet.
