Multiple Roles

At times the leader is the parent, at other times he is the friend, the peer, the moral support, the educator, the brother, the sister, or the wise grandparent. It is important that the leader understands this and feels comfortable in these multiple roles. The leader needs to understand that group members too have multiple roles, being witness to both crime and its victim.

The leader should understand and have first-hand experience with group dynamics and group cycles, and appreciate and acknowledge that insights do not emerge according to a schedule—they just occur, many times triggered after a group meeting or interaction. At those times the participant, depending on the type of insight emerging, should have the option of contacting the group leader or a cohort member to discuss this. Many times the insights are key and lead to other insights or revelations.
