Figure 7-6 Hybrid child themes
Non-developers can use Hybrid with a child theme to get a website up and running very quickly, but its main strength lies in its code. It's a popular framework with developers, who value its hooks and filters to create customized sites that couldn't be done with the Dashboard alone. However, in order to get the most from it, you need to subscribe to the support forums—for example, without a subscription, it's not even possible to get documentation on the filters and hooks.
Wonderflux
Wonderflux is a completely free, open-source theme framework that requires no charge for support. Although it includes functionality aimed at non-coders, such as layout options configured via the Dashboard, it is really aimed at developers.
Features include the following:
• A dynamic grid-based layout that can be configured via the Dashboard
• Additional CSS classes generated on the body and post, allowing for custom styling
• More than a dozen hooks and a smaller number of functions and filters, all documented
• The capability to filter, remove, or replace every core function
• A comprehensive user guide at http://wonderflux.com/guide/
• A free child theme called WFX Girder (http://code.google.com/p/wonderflux-girder-theme/) that demonstrates how to use Wonderflux
Wonderflux is quite different from the frameworks mentioned already. It's aimed squarely at developers, with most customization done via code, not the Dashboard. The one exception is the layout, which is configured via the Stylelab page, shown in Figure 7-7.
