Chapter Thirteen

ADRIAN

We decided on a table toward the back of the pub where we could have some semblance of privacy. Although, with so many supes in the room, that privacy was an illusion. It might keep humans from overhearing things they shouldn’t, but not anyone else.

I steered Jeremy into a chair. His mouth kept opening and closing but so far, he hadn’t said anything more. I took the seat beside him, while his so-called best friend sat on his other side. The hellhound sat across from Jeremy. I couldn’t believe Willow Lake had two hellhounds. Every time I thought I had this place figured out, it shocked me all over again.

Even in this pub, there were so many different supes I had trouble parsing through the chaotic mix of magical energies. I’d have some interesting information to pass along to Gage later when I checked in. Although he’d been to Willow Lake, right? He’d met Van there. So he would know all this already. It was weird that he hadn’t said anything to me. Unless they met somewhere else… But why would they?

Ash reached for Jeremy’s hand, but Jeremy pulled away and started softly singing the opening line of Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love a Bad Name.”

Ash rolled his eyes. “That song doesn’t make sense in this situation.”

Jeremy gaped, clearly offended. “It’s about betrayal.”

“Between lovers,” Ash argued.

Dillon growled.

“There, there, big guy.” Ash patted his hellhound on the hand absently. “We’re friends not lovers.” He frowned at Jeremy again. “Which is why that song doesn’t work.”

“Well, Willow, excuse me for not knowing the perfect song about how my best friend was a magical fucking being and never told me.” Jeremy crossed his arms over his chest.

Ash smiled. “Holy hellfire, I’ve missed you.”

Jeremy’s mouth quirked. “Of course you did. I’m amazing.”

“And if I’m Willow, who are you? Xander?”

“No way. I’m in training to be Giles or Wesley.”

Ash laughed. “You’re totally Xander.”

“Fine. He was loyal and awesome. I can work with that.” Jeremy lifted his shoulders in a casual shrug. “So does that make Adrian Oz? He was one of my faves.” His eyes widened. “I guess I’ve always had a thing for werewolves, now that I think about it.”

I had no idea what they were talking about, but I didn’t like Jeremy thinking about any other werewolf but me.

Ash’s eyes softened and his mouth twisted in what I could only describe as an apologetic grimace as he stretched his hand toward Jeremy on the table. “I’m sorry, okay. I tried a million times to tell you and I didn’t know how.”

Jeremy huffed.

“I am happy you know now.”

Jeremy waved his hand through the air and leaned close to Ash. “You’re forgiven. Mostly because I’ve had a crazy day. I just found out about all this today and I need my BFF. You don’t know how many times I wanted to call you…”

The men hugged. And just like that, Jeremy seemed to have forgiven his friend. I didn’t think it was that easy, but no one questioned the quick turnabout.
