Chapter 10

I pushed my reading glasses up my nose and squinted at the page in front of me. Toma had suggested I branch out with my writing. I had mostly used my horticulture degree to write a few books about caring for certain types of plants. But he managed to get me a couple of reference books online that were written by legitimate witches, and now I was hooked.

The books Toma showed me talked about how to use various plants and herbs, but not how to grow them. I was eager to do some experiments. With the proper soil, nutrients, and care, I bet the quality of the plants would change, which might affect the spells or charms practitioners were using them for. I was currently cross-referencing a book on lunar cycles. I knew some plants grew better or produced better flowers or fruit at certain times of the month, and it all seemed to tie in with what I was learning.

The print was still a bit blurry, and I went to shove my glasses up again, only to find they were firmly jammed into my face already. Pulling them off, I rubbed my eyes. Had my prescription changed again? I went to the eye doctor just a few months ago. They'd been surprised that my vision was improving, rather than declining with age. I had decided then that it probably had something to do with my weird physiology, and that I was never going back there. But now…reading was a really big part of my life. I should probably get my eyes looked at again.

Jet stretched and got up from his blanket on the floor, which he'd dragged into a sunny patch earlier. He trotted over to me and stared up at me with those big, weird yellow eyes. I wasn't sure where we were at with our relationship at the moment. I'd been feeding him people food. Last night, he got steak and mashed potatoes and a cookie for dinner. He hadn't growled at me in a while. But after that whole turning people-shaped thing he'd done, I was uncomfortable. How was I supposed to treat the cat? Was it wrong to pet him? And…oh, crap, he'd seen my awkward body naked so many times, back when I thought he was just an animal.

He chirped at me and slapped a paw at the book in my lap as if telling me to pay attention. Then he stretched up and put his paws on my chest, grabbed my glasses in his mouth, and tugged them out of my hand.

I watched him, confused. "You know, I really don't understand how any of this familiar thing works," I muttered. "Are you trying to help me right now? Or are you just being a cat and causing trouble?"

He tossed the glasses aside, letting them drop to the rug at my feet. Then he huffed and sat on his haunches. When I just stared at him, he slapped the book with his paw again.
