Chapter 13

Keisha left Anton and nursed their daughter the moment they returned from their run. Then she put Lily back to bed, showered and wrapped herself in a pale blue sarong. She found her mate leaning against the railing on the back deck. He’d put on a pair of worn Levis and a soft, black sweater, so unlike his usual dark slacks and white shirt. His dark hair was still wet from his shower, his feet were bare. She stood behind him, studying the long, lean lines of his body until her eyes settled on the frayed hems of his jeans and the soft dusting of dark hair across the tops of his feet.

She’d always loved looking at his long, narrow feet. There was something inherently sexy about a man’s bare feet, in the touch of vulnerability combined with the strength to carry him upright. She thought of how she could make his toes curl when she went down on him. How it felt when he ran his toes along her bare leg during sex.

How very much she loved him.

“Why, Keisha?” Anton turned around with his arms folded over his chest. There was no condemnation in his eyes. Only curiosity. A need to understand.

“Two things.” She stopped a couple of feet away from him and gazed into his dark, troubled eyes. “It was wrong to give her the nutrients without her permission. You took away her choice. You know how I feel about that. How the other women feel, but you chose to act without considering our very real distaste for what you did. That was wrong, and I have a right to my anger.”

He blinked, but said nothing.

Keisha clasped her hands together in front of her waist. She didn’t want to hurt him, but he needed and wanted the truth. “Ultimately,” she said, “it was Manda. She was held against her will for too many years to allow it to happen to anyone else. Your decision harmed Manda more than it hurt Daci. It awakened all her old pain, her fears. You didn’t see what was so patently obvious in Manda, and you wouldn’t listen to my arguments. We had no choice but to act.”

She sighed and shook her head. “Manda didn’t even think to come to you. She was devastated by your decision to lock Daci in the room. She still is.”

“Logan and Jazzy?”

“They’re young and idealistic, and they believe in total freedom of the spirit. They were shocked when you locked Daci up, even though they were totally disgusted by her reaction when she learned the truth about us. You took away the chance for them to have a part in the sentence you decreed. You took away their choice.”

“And Deacon?”

Keisha smiled. “Ah, you were right about Deacon. He loves her, in spite of the hateful things she said. It just took him awhile to come around, to get past his hurt.”

“But I was wrong where it mattered, wasn’t I?” He held his arms out to her, and Keisha flowed into his embrace.
