Chapter 10
The dog huffed and kicked his paws restlessly. I grimaced and crouched close to the tree, reaching for the skateboard once more. The dogâs nose twitched. I grabbed the skateboard and quickly stood. Dark eyes opened and pinned me under their angry stare. Lips lifted from his teeth, and the dog growled.
I held the skateboard in front of me, hoping it would hold if he charged. Bruiser got up and shook the dust from his fur. He could do some damage to someone that wasnât me. That didnât mean I wanted to see who would win in a fight.
I growled deep in my throat. My growl wasnât wild and violent like the leaders of my pack, but it was scary enough to frighten a pet dog.
Bruiser pinned his ears back and whined.
âMind your business,â I said as I backed out of the range of his chain.
Bruiser lowered his head and crawled toward me, wagging his tail. Alright. He wasnât that scary. I put the board down and scratched his chin. âAre you going to be a good boy?â
Bruiser wagged his tail harder.
I unsnapped the chain from his collar, and he drooled happily over my hand. I scratched his shoulder, and the big dog leaned against me. âAlright, get out of here. And stay out of trouble. I canât do anything if you get caught.â
The dog woofed and trotted away.
I still had a mission. I tucked Carmenâs skateboard under my arm. Mickey was next. Hopefully, heâd found my book. I didnât know what would happen if we couldnât find my book. Zombies couldnât be that bad.
I followed Mickeyâs scent around the trailer.
âOw! What are you doing?â a strange voice yelled.
I dropped the skateboard and hurried around the back of the trailer to a strange sight. Mickey had his hands around a boyâs legs, pulling him from a window in the trailer.
The boy yelled and thrashed, kicking Mickey in the chest. I hurried over to grab the boyâs other leg, pulling him down.
The boy crashed to the ground on top of us, and we wrestled for the upper hand. He was stronger than Iâd expected, and I was nearly punched in the face before Mickey got the guyâs arm behind his back and pushed him down on his chest.
âOw! Let go! I donât have your stupid book!â he yelled.
The boy was thin-ribbed and had several days of dirt caked under his nails. He had a mean eye and was primed to bite at any moment. Dirty hair flopped in his face as he struggled.
Mickey sat on his back and twisted the boyâs arm. âI donât believe you, Rudy.â
âI didnât take it! I swear! Just the bike,â Rudy said. He stretched his free hand toward the forest, and there was my bike. Weeds were already growing through the spokes, attempting to pull it down into the ground. Magic. Weird magic.
I glanced at the stacks of cars and twisted metal frames. Broken spells sizzled across the yard. Something wasnât right. I stared at Rudy as he struggled against Mickeyâs grip.
