Chapter 14

“Come,” Alice heard Mashka’s voice from behind her. “Give her time to let that temper go. Let’s get you something to eat.” A friendly arm went around her and pulled her away. She could feel her cheek, reddening from the slap but inside, she could feel the wolf trying to get out. Anger rose within her and Alice thrust Mashka’s arm away from her.

“What the hell did I do?” Alice snapped, her face turning redder. “She had no right to do that to me.” Eyes became mean as she turned. “I’m going to have this out with her now!”

Alice took a step and then was pulled back harshly. Pulled around to face Mashka she saw the older Walker was no longer smiling. “You will do no such thing. Mashka narrowed her eyes. “Be very careful Alice. Attempt to strike me with those and I will show you just how weak you really are, girl.” Then a finger was poking her in the chest. “What, you think I was going to be a good substitute to wake up to. You are everything she wants although the goddess knows why. She gave you everything she had and you changed and ran and she forgave that because you had no control. But you don’t have that excuse any more do you, Alice. But you up and left anyway, leaving her alone. How worthless do you think that made her feel?”

Alice took a step back shocked. All the anger she felt drained from her and she shook her head. “I had to go. The voice wouldn’t stop. It was calling me so clearly. It wanted me to know so I could help it.”

“And you couldn’t take a minute to shake her awake, to explain what was going on?” Markus reached them but Mashka held up a hand to forestall him. “I spent a lifetime on my back being paid to do what you gave freely. After a while, you get used to the looks of
