Chapter 9

Oh God, oh God, oh God, it was happening, it was actually happening. The screaming of the scramble alarm yanked Margot from sleep and she fell from her bunk trying to get up before she fully woke up. She grabbed her tablet from the shelf and the light glared into her eyes. Luke’s pod. All green. Thank fuck. She tossed the tablet on the bed, pulled off the nightdress she wore and grabbed for her fatigues. She dressed fast, shoved her bare feet into her shoes and, on her way out of the door, grabbed a hair tie.

The corridor outside was bright and full of rushing, shouting people. Nobody went for the lift; they all ran up the ladder to the command deck and pounded into Ops. Izzy and Dom were there already, handing out armor and weapons. Margot tied up her hair as she waited. She caught Eileen’s eye and Eileen gave her a strained smile, mouthed good luck at her.

She reached the head of the line. Izzy handed her a slingshot, without a word, practically shoving it into her hands. No time to say anything. She moved on, to Dom, who gave her the bag of ball bearings. She didn’t get armor because she’d be up on the catwalk. As others gathered lances and shock prods, she felt like a coward who’d be safe up in a tower while others battled below.

No, she must not think of it that way. Izzy had told her that the slingshot squad—try saying that ten times fast —were key to keeping the people on the floor safe. They had the bird’s eye view that the floor squad didn’t. They could clear a path for the rescuers to get to the pods with the normals in.

“Just one normal this time,” Johaan called from the control desk. “Level 3, Chamber 1. Pod is 2764.”

“Got it,” Izzy said, pushing through to the front of the squad, all of them armed and ready now. Dom went to join Johaan at the control desk. Margot took a glance at the screens as Izzy led the group from the room. The captain was in her ready room, presumably already talking to the woken normal. A pod status card showed the face of a dark-skinned woman, a name, Citra Darmawan. Citra, Margot thought, embedding the name and the face in her mind, to make sure she remembered the stakes. A woman’s life.

Once in the hallways, the team ran. Margot fastened the slingshot to her arm as she went. The heavy bag hurt, pulling on her shoulder and banging into her hip, but she ignored that. When they reached Section 2 of Level 3, Thomas, a fellow slingshot squad member, unceremoniously grabbed Margot by the arm and directed her at the steps that led up to a catwalk. There was a door up there, directly above the one on the floor. She ran up the ladder after Thomas, the sound of their feet pounding on the metal steps ringing loud, echoing through the section.
